Cancun Gets Rid of Mandatory Arrival Forms for Visitors
If you have traveled to Cancun recently, you probably had to wait in long lines at the airport. Part of those delays were due to customs forms. According to Cancun Sun, many travelers didn’t complete the Forma Multipla Migratoria (FMM) paperwork online and did so in person. That has often caused delays at security and immigration checkpoints.
Now, government officials in Cancun announced that Cancun has scrapped the need for arriving travelers to fill out and has granted Americans a fast-track entry process. The change comes after multiple requests from businesses and travel agencies in the Mexican Caribbean tourism industry.
The Mexican Association of Travel Agencies in Quintana Roo’s executive president Sergio Gonzalez Rubiera said eliminating the paperwork would reduce the process from around an hour to just minutes. The new system is expected yo be available soon in other airports in Mexico.
The government will now issue travelers from the United States and other approved countries a stamp, instead of the previously required card. Until now, tourists were required to present the card upon leaving the country, and if it was lost or stolen the visitor would incur a $25 tax and get delayed until a new card was issued.
Now, approved travelers will be granted a residence permit for 180 days. The government is working to streamline the entry process and ease the workload for airport employees. Staff shortages have affected Mexico as well, like most other countries.
Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism recently revealed that the country hosted approximately 25.4 million international visitors between January and May. That’s an increase of 5.2 million compared to the same period in 2021, an increase of 25.9%.
