Cathay Pacific to Devalue Asia Miles Program
Cathay Pacific is devaluing its loyalty and frequent-flyer program Asia Miles. The devaluation was revealed in a statement on its website. “To continue offering you increased seat availability, our flight award charts will be updated for redemption tickets issued on or after 1 October 2023.”
But what does this update mean? It’s mostly a considerable increase in pricing across the board, with some awards going up by nearly 30%.
Here’s the new award chart for travel on Cathay Pacific:
If we compare it to the old chart which is in effect until September 30, you will notice that business class ultra long haul flights such as New York to Hong Kong go from 85,000 to 110,000 miles each way, a 29% increase. First class on the same route goes from 125,000 to 160,000 miles, a 28% increase.
For long haul flights, business class jumps from 70,000 miles to 84,000 miles each-way (20% increase), and first class goes from 110,000 miles to 125,000 miles (14% increase). Business class om medium flights go from 45,000 miles to 58,000 miles (29% increase), and first class from 70,000 miles to 90,000 miles (29% increase).
Premium cabin partner awards are also increasing, almost consistently across the board. You can see the new chart here, and compare it to the old chart.
Conclusion
Cathay Pacific still publishes n award chart, so they are forced to inform members when they update the award pricing. This is a big devaluation, that also comes just after an Asia Miles transfer bonus from Citi and American Express.
The only positives in the announcement are that some Economy awards are decreasing by about 10% and that you have three months until the new chart kicks in.
