American Express Centurion Lounge Coming to Newark Airport
American Express is in the early stages of a new Centurion Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport. That would be the third lounge in the tri-state area.
The Centurion Network consists of 40+ locations worldwide including Centurion Lounges and Escape Lounges. Card members can escape into luxury before flying, enjoy food and drink from award-winning chefs and top mixologists. Two of those lounges are already available to New Yorkers and those passing through the regions, at LaGuardia and JFK.
Now the brand-new Terminal A at EWR has provided an opportunity for American Express to add an 18,000-square-foot lounge. That would be the largest Centurion Lounge yet.
TPG first reported the information provided in the public agenda for Thursday’s board meeting of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the region’s airports. Part of the agenda is a proposed resolution about the development of a non-airline-branded lounge in an expansion to the new terminal.
In a following statement confirming the move, an American Express spokesperson told TPG:
We are working closely with the Port Authority to explore options for a new Centurion Lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport. We will continue to work with their team to finalize these proposed details.
Centurion Lounge Details
The proposal reveals some information about the possible Centurion Lounge at EWR.
The lease would be for 15 years, with one five-year option period exercisable by Amex upon the satisfaction of certain conditions precedent.
The lounge would be located on the third floor of the NTA Expansion Area, and the areas on the first and second floors of such New Building would be subleased back to the Port Authority for potential sub-subleasing to third parties.
The lease would start on or about January 1, 2022, which means that we could see construction start within a few months. Amex would pay the Port Authority directly an approximate total aggregate rental of $121.5 million over the term of the lease, pay a percentage of gross receipts, and invest approximately $100 million to construct the NTA Expansion Area and passenger lounge.
The lounge would include an array of industry-leading amenities, such as:
- a viewing terrace overlooking the EWR airfield, Port of Newark, New York and Newark Harbor, and the Manhattan skyline;
- multiple signature Amex food and bar areas;
- a piano lounge;
- a Jersey jazz-themed bar; and
- a speakeasy-themed backstage cocktail lounge.
- premium amenities, such as wellness rooms, workstations and more
