Change Fees Are Making a Comeback at American Airlines

During the pandemic we saw many airlines make customer friendly changes such as extending status, extending expiring miles, and getting rid of cancelation and change fees. This was a time when very few people were traveling, so airlines had to fight for customers.

Now everything has changed. Those same airlines can’t keep up with travel demand. And as you might expect, they are rolling back some of those generous changes which were supposed to be “permanent”.

American Airlines is one of the carriers going back on its word of making change fees a thing of the past. An internal memo first published by View from the Wing, shows that the airline has reinstated change fees for select markets originating in Europe, Asia and the Pacific, as of June 10, 2022.

For now this change doesn’t include domestic tickets, but I guess that “permanent” change could be reversed as well. And Southwest jumped on the new right away:
