Update: When this post was first written, it mistakenly referred to the changes as being to the newer and currently available Ink Business Cash card. In fact, these changes are to older and no longer available Ink Cash card. The article has been updated to reflect the correct information.

Chase Ink Cash Ultimate Rewards

Chase is sending out an email to holders of their Ink Cash card (not the new Ink Business Cash but the old card) informing them of improvements coming to the card’s rewards as of January 29, 2017. Specifically, the card will begin earning Ultimate Rewards points instead of cashback on that date.

What this means:

  • Rewards earned won’t expire as long as the card is open.
  • Rewards can be used to book travel online.
  • There will be no minimum amount required to redeem for cash.

This basically brings old Ink Cash cardholders in line with cardholders of their newer Ink Business Cash card.

  1. The question remains if the earning ratios will remain intact for the “Old” Ink Cash program when it converts to UR. The old program gave 3% back on gas, restaurants and home improvement/hardware stores, which is very different than the current Ink Cash with UR.

  2. This is interesting, is there a reason I should keep the Ink Preferred now when my annual fee comes up? I’m surprised they would phase out the Ink Preferred but then promote the Ink Cash to basically be the same… am I missing something?

  3. Chase has (at least) two different versions of the Ink Cash card. The original version which I had until recently only accrued points for cash back and had expiration periods on those points. The points on that card were not at all transferable to Ultimate Rewards cards (CSP, Ink+, etc.). With this conversion, it sounds like those with the older version of the Ink Cash will now be able to finally combine their points with other UR cards. Those who already have the “521” version of the Ink Cash with Ultimate Rewards shouldn’t see any changes (or at least I hope we don’t!).
