Citi and Mastercard Launch “True Name” Feature Across the U.S.

Today, Citi has unveiled the bank’s latest step forward in its efforts towards championing inclusivity. They are offering transgender and non-binary people the ability to use their chosen name on their credit cards. The feature, called “True Name”, is launched in collaboration with Mastercard across the U.S.

Eligible existing credit cardmembers are immediately able to request a new credit card, which displays their chosen name. In the coming weeks, customers will also be able to be serviced by their chosen name when they call into customer service and also across online and mobile access points.

“At Citi, we are passionate about helping to ensure our customers feel recognized, accepted and empowered to be their true selves,” said Carla Hassan, Citi Chief Marketing Officer. “We’re incredibly proud to launch the True Name feature, through our relationship with Mastercard, because we strongly believe that our customers should have the opportunity to be called by the name that represents who they really are.”

“Since introducing the True Name feature, we’ve received incredible feedback from our partners and allies within the transgender and non-binary communities on how the capability has eased a major pain point in their lives,” said Cheryl Guerin, EVP marketing & communications for Mastercard. “By working with Citi and its significant network, we’re thrilled that we’ll be able to extend the reach and impact of the True Name initiative.”

How to Change Your Name

Here’s how to change your first name on your credit card to your preferred name:

  • Log in to your Citi-branded credit card account (or you can call the number on the back of your card).
  • Under Profile, go to Contact Information.
  • Click “Use a Preferred First Name,” enter the first name you go by and click save. Citi will try to use this name on our communications to you. However they will continue to use your legal first name for certain communications. Additionally, Citi may ask for your legal name for identity verification purposes.

If you have a Citi® banking account, check back for debit card updates. To learn more, visit citi.com/updatemyname.

  1. This sounds silly. Is this what citi really needs to be focusing on when they have billions to spend on fixing their compliance issues? Is appealing to 1% of the population going to help citi shareholders?

At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter. It’s fine that airlines now offer a third gender option for people. It doesn’t make sense for people to have to change pronoun use or ask everyone for preferred pronoun when standard pronouns work for 99% of the public. But gender options for tickets, it’s an easy accommodation. The true name thing sounds like more trouble than it’s worth, though. People who transition already have the option to change their legal name to match gender identity. If certain documents and agreements have to be in the legal name, this won’t change things for that. This is another layer of complication. How often do people call into citi unless they have a problem with the card?

  2. I don’t understand why there’s such an immediate reaction to this news which concentrates solely on the way it could be abused.
Allow people to drink alcohol and we permit drunk driving – so, no alcohol foe anybody?
Allow people to buy a telephone and it can be used in phone fraud – so, ban phones?
Allow people to buy a computer with an Internet connection and, do I really need to continue?
Almost anything society allows which is good for some people can be abused by others but that’s a terrible reason to deny it.
Might I be so bold as suggesting this new feature isn’t useful to George and Joseph? They therefore see no reason to deny it to everybody else, including those who would legitimately benefit from it, just because it could be misused?

  3. You can only change your first name, not the family name, so no that won’t happen. And you cannot use a fictitious, profane or funny name according to MasterCard.

  4. I have to agree with George. OMG, the ways this could be used for fraud are limitless. What high-priced idiot consultant thought this would be a good idea?

    • Well we need to encourage diversity & equality, social justice being super important what’s a few old curmudgeons paying a little price of inconvenience? Also great is no more dragging wife to OfficeDepot for 2-P 5x, I am her when I feel like it.

      • Social justice and diversity sound like anti white racism to me. No one complains that Japan, Kenya, Bangladesh, or Haiti need more diversity. Diversity is only something white countries need because whites aren’t allowed the same freedoms and rights as other groups. Got it.

        • You’ve taken the intellectual leap from Citi allowing a change of first name on a credit card to suggesting we should aspire to be more like Haiti – I’m impressed!

  5. Yeah, this totally won’t be abused

    etc

The woke movement is really idiotic it seems.
