Class Action Lawsuit Investigation Over Online Foreign Transaction Fees
If you use your credit or debit card abroad you get charged a foreign transaction fee. There are many cards that do not have these fees, and you should always carry one of those when traveling. But sometimes you even get charged a foreign transaction fee while shopping from home. This happens when a credit or debit card purchase is made on foreign websites. Typically, foreign exchange fees range between 1%-3%.
Now a possible class action lawsuit claims that some of these foreign transaction fees are unlawful. This is regarding foreign exchange fees on transactions that were conducted online within the United States but on foreign websites. Although charging these fees on online purchases is not illegal, these fees may violate some bank’s own contracts. The article does not mention any banks by name.
Consumers who were charged foreign exchange fees on their online purchases may be able to take legal action. In addition to recovering the amount that was charged in fees, consumers may be able to collect additional compensation in the form of damages.
