When I write about saving money, I often refer to my go-to tools. For example, when searching for hotels, I have a number of sites and resources I use to find the best rates. No single site or tool is always best, which means I need to diversify.
One of the greatest ways to save on hotels is through private membership “clubs”. These sites can offer lower than public rates on hotels. Sometimes they work by discounting last minute bookings like in the case of Hotel Tonight and other times they offer a rebate on commissions earned.
There is a new Hotel Club called Club1Hotels that has been making a big splash. They are a membership club that is aiming to provide value by foregoing their commission to offer members wholesale rates. Normally, it costs $675 per year for a membership (which also includes airport lounge access), but right now you can get a one year membership for free. (Without lounge access.)

Analysis
I have spent some time searching and it does seem that Club1 can provide better deals, especially at higher end branded hotels. They really are trying to offer wholesale rates to members, which of course they need to do if they want to justify their cost. Consistently I have found that they are 10-20% less per night at Hyatt properties with similar results at other brands.

My best deal was probably staying Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg. That’s not the Four Seasons, but an independent property (at least it was way back when I stayed there) part of The Leading Hotels Of The World “association.” I was writing for Fodor’s then, and was given one night free stay as a travel professional. When I went to check on my free breakfast voucher in the morning, the same guy was working who had checked me in. We got to chatting and he asked me if staying another night or two would help me get a better impression of the hotel. I was totally honest with him and said I was in fact going to be in Hamburg two additional night, and had planned to stay at my sister-in-laws. He said, well why don’t you both stay here? and promptly booked me into a junior sweet for two additional nights. The hotel had been extremely empty that January night, so I’m guessing he was just being very friendly and helpful. That night we had a champagne party on our balcony facing the Binnen Alster–a longtime dream of my sister-in-laws! Amazing!
A steal of a deal on a block of hotel rooms for friends and family in Arlington, TX! It’s amazing how much you can save sometimes when you negotiate directly with a hotel!
I got a hotel room in Houston, TX for $17!

My best deal is to come after getting 24% off my Disney cruise stateroom using the Sam’s Club deal posted here a few days ago.
Best paid was the Aria penthouse suite for $159.
The best paid hotel deal I ever got was a free week at the Palacio del Retiro in Madrid. A lovely hotel, part of the Marriott Autograph Collection. The parents of two high school students I used to tutor treated me!

I was in Quito, Ecuador and somehow managed to get booked into this suite that I only paid $75 total. Largest hotel suite I have ever been in! I only booked a cheap but safe American chain hotel – that I cannot remember now – but it had ridiculously large sized walk in closets, a huge bathroom/shower and separate tub, big full sized kitchen, living room, big dining room with tables and dining cabinet/chest/dishes and the works. No idea if it was a mistake or upgrade…
Hyatt Washington, using diamond suite upgrade certificate to get two rooms for the price of one ($100/night)

Conrad Tokyo for about $300 a night
Best paid hotel deal I’ve ever bagged is Conrad Tokyo for $300 from Travelpony.
Booked a room and parking rate at the Fairmont in SF for less than $160 which is a good deal… but what made it the best deal was the upgrade. They upgraded us to the Fairmont Suite which normally goes for over $2000 a night.
Normally, it costs $675 per year for a membership (which also includes airport lounge access), but right now you can get a one year membership for free. (Without lounge access.)

Best was $129 for an exec suite at 5* in Bangkok that included doubles massage and breakfast
New York New York Las Vegas for $35 in new years eve!
On a rainy night, after a trying day, arriving to a booking mishap, an unexpected, unasked for upgrade to a Tower Suite at the Fairmont in San Francisco and a late check-out. All I wanted was a room with a bed. Some combination of a sympathetic and discerning front desk person, a bedraggled, exhausted look and serendipity – I wasn’t there long but loved every minute of it. San Francisco is always wonderful. But that evening, morning and afternoon, The City couldn’t beckon me outside the doors of the Fairmont.
Best hotel deal was buying discounted hotels.com giftcards at 10% off. Booking hotels.com stays through Ibotta with 5% cashback plus a 15% off discount for selected hotels stay through mobile hotels.com reservation.
Best Hotel Deal I got was $60 a night at the Monte Carlo in Vegas!!
Latest would be Intercontinental Guadalajara for $62/nt.
Have been able to take advantage of several one-night Extreme Hotel Deals — Night Hotel near Times Square for $30 maybe was the best.
Probably through Priceline with an additional discount through a mobile code. A room priced close to $400 became $118.
I landed a room at a cat 5 aloft in silicon valley for a hundred dollars that along with a promo gave me another free night at any spg class 5 or lower for 99 dollars. Plus I got upgraded to an awesome room.

conference rate at Disneyland Hotel
We stayed at a Mainstays Hotel in San Antonio for 6 nights at $250.
Ocean view Four Seasons Maui for about $300 per night. Rate was low because it was a few months after 9/11. While $300 isn’t cheap, I haven’t seen anything below $800 for the same room since. Oh, on that trip we also got ocean front at the Fairmont in Wailea for $199. Included breakfast and a $100 room credit.
MGM Grand, Las Vegas for $70, 1/2 off original price….
Holiday Inn in Colorado Winter Park. Awesome for 15k points!

Holiday inn express glenrothes in 2011 for £0.01 a room.
hmmm… really look forward to a full write up for this program dude. im skeptical man. will see.
First, the website is outdated for a $675.00/year hotel discount program. Huge turn-off, but I need to check out the savings. IMHO, I would rather pay $675.00 AF on a new AMEX Plat with amazing benefits. that would be more worth it for me than just a hotel discount club, which is what this is.
But I do see several items of interest and potential. Golf benefit? Wholesale international airfare discounts? Preferred rates at Car Rental companies? Discounts at Restaurants and Spa’s? I gotta see the discount.
While people use points to get around, if the discounts are huge, you just pay cash. Just depends on the math.
Second, lounge access is totally useless. They dont even bother saying its the lowest version where you have to PAY for EACH entry. Totally sneaky dude. As soon as they said, PP valued at $100, RED ALERT went off. Only the cheap ass PP is $100. Which is the STANDARD version w/ Annual fee of $99 and a Member visit fee of $27. Kidding me. We all have PP from various CC which is the Select Version. Much better than this POS.
Third. An OTA is an OTA. If you want to get into premium OTA category, it better make me a sandwich with some ice cream. Will have to see how this is compared to the Expedia family like Orbitz and Hotels.com.
Value prop has to be there. Gotta see what is break even. Skeptical because these guys are new. Obviously MtM is the man to do it and run the analysis because in the end, this will make sense for some and not for others like any club membership such a Costco or Amazon Prime.
Also, whats up with the chip in the membership card? I dont know man. Will see I guess…
Actually booked the Shangri La Bangalore yesterday for $29 plus tax.
Best paid deal was at Bali, 3-Rooms house with a butler/chef service, private swimming pool, driver, with add on personal masseuse service for $200/night.
Unfortunately, I haven’t travelled much yet and all my hotels have come through package deals purchased for vacations. However, I’m now a member of Club1Hotels, so I should have a better story to tell the next time I answer this question.
Doubletree in KL was a great deal at 10,000 points a night!
Sadly i have never scored an amazing hotel deal.. hope to catch one soon. Mainly just buy 3 nights get 1/2 free but thats pretty normal.
Upgraded to a gigantic corner suite at the Conrad Hong Kong for $150/night.
Scored a night at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver for about 100 via hotwire, rooms that night were over 300 each if I’d booked direct.
The best paid rate I ever got was 120$/night for a downtown Manhattan hotel.
Holiday Inn, Phuket, Thailand at 1.5 cents a night. Mistake rate, obviously.
The best deal I ever scored was 2 weeks at a Holiday in in Phuket, Thailand for 21 cents for the total price.
IHG BRGs… dozens of times
Best Deal: St. Regis Bangkok – $150/night
Westin St John ( a few months after 9/11, when no one wanted to travel) only $100 per night
Less than $100 per night at Venice Hilton Molino Stucky when the hotel was first opening
Expedia mistake rate Aria Vegas for 54 a night.
fantastic deal.. love to make booking here.
Hyatt in Cancun < 100 per night for two people
The best deal was the Westin in Union Square in San Francisco. I was presenting at a conference and the hosting company paid 3 of the 6 nights, with the remaining 3 nights at my charge at the negotiated rate. At checkout however they make a mistake, giving me a bill for the whole week. I politely asked to check, hey find the fax where the company agreed to pay, they apologize and tell me the 3 nights are complimentary due to their mistake. Sweet free vacation!
Stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton Beijing back when the BRG was still offering a USD$50 adjustment in rate if i found a lower rate. Ended up paying $10 for a night in a suite with lounge access and breakfast. Best deal ever.
Best deal: Hotwire hotel deal for less than 1/2 full price.
