Maximizing Discover 2nd Quarter Bonus Categories
Discover’s 2nd quarter bonus categories are now available for registration. This upcoming quarter you can earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Grocery Stores from April til June.
How It Works
The Discover it card earns 5% cashback on up to the first $1,500 in bonus category spend per quarter. If you are able to fully maximize the benefit then you can earn $75 cash back every 3 months.
Activate
You have to activate the bonus before making your purchases in order to get the 5% back. The 2th quarter bonus categories can be activated now by visiting this page and logging into your account.
Maximizing
This 2nd quarter bonus should be pretty easy to maximize this bonus. Everyone buys groceries, so a good chunk of that spending can be done organically. If you can’t do teh whole 1,500 that way, many grocery stores and supermarkets also sell gift cards.
1st Quarter Reminder
As a reminder Discover is paying 5% on Gas Stations & Wholesale Clubs during the first quarter, until March 31st. You have a month left to complete the spending, and this one should be pretty easy as well.
Get the Card
If you don’t have the Discover it card currently, you can earn double cashback your first year. That means you earn 2% cashback on normal purchases and 10% cashback on bonus category purchases.
If you use a referral link then you also get $50 when signing up which is doubled to $100 as well.
Conclusion
Discover’s 2nd quarter bonus category is pretty easy to maximize given the fact that everyone needs groceries and gift cards are also an option. Just don’t forget to activate the 2nd Quarter bonus categories first, before you make any qualifying purchases, or you won’t earn the bonus cash. Do that now!

Why do the Discover 5x categories always mimic the Freedom categories? It can’t be doing them any good to copy Chase – anybody who has both cards will use the Chase Freedom and before the Discover. Since I’m using these cards for actual category spend and not MS schemes, this makes the Discover It pretty much worthless to me. 🙁 If it weren’t free, I’d dump it.
