Emirates Offers COVID-19 Insurance

Emirates want people to start flying again without having to worry about COVID-19 and how to pay for expenses that might arise from it. The airline says it will now cover medical expenses, quarantine costs and will even pay to transport your body back home and up to $1,750 for funeral costs if the worst happens.

Emirates says that “customers can travel with confidence, as the airline will cover medical expenses of up to €150,000 ($175,000) and quarantine costs of €100 ($117) per day for 14 days, should they be diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travel, while they are away from home.” This cover will be provided by the airline, at no additional cost for passengers.

This cover for COVID-19 related medical expenses and quarantine costs is offered by Emirates for free, regardless of class of travel or destination. This cover is immediately effective for customers flying on Emirates with at least the first flight in the itinerary completed by October 31, 2020. The coverage is valid for 31 days from the moment they fly the first sector of their journey. That means that Emirates passengers can continue to benefit from the added assurance of this coverage, even if they travel to another city after arriving at their Emirates destination.

There’s no need to register or fill in any forms before traveling in order to enroll in this coverage. “Any impacted customer who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 during their travel simply has to contact a dedicated hotline,” the announcement says.

The coverage also has a provision for cases of COVID-19 deaths. Emirates will pay full costs for transporting the body to home country and cover funeral costs up to a limit of €1,500 ($1,750) per covered person. That’s probably not something you want to think about when getting on a flight or heading out for a vacation.

  1. It’s a noble effort from EK.
However, I suspect if you flew to the USA, got C19, were intubated for, say, 3 weeks and were one of the 40% who lived (statistically, you have a 40% chance of surviving intubation), your medical bill would be way more than USD175K. More like USD700K. Is the policy coverage really adequate?
Well, it’s comforting to know EK will pay for the cost of shipping you home in a coffin.
    Caveat emptor.
