Hotel Free Night Certs

A variety of hotel chains incorporate free night certs into their loyalty programs to create more interest, and they’re largely successful.Ā  With this option comes more program complexity, and plenty of already-engaged loyalists naturally opt in.Ā  The past few years, I’ve redeemed free night certs more often than certain programs’ points.

It’s easy to take things too far here, though.Ā  Back in 2021, we had way more than we needed.Ā  But in recent years, it’s been a healthy balance of picking up new ones and using existing others.Ā  But it’s good to check in now and then on my current FNC situation, and I’m doing so today.

Our Hotel Free Night Certs Situation

Hilton Honors

I’ll start with probably the best hotel free night certs currently out there.Ā  Hilton Honors FNCs are redeemable at the vast majority of participating properties with a few exceptions (primarily timeshare properties).Ā  These certs have arguably become even more valuable in the last year thanks to the program’s multiple hikes on traditional points redemptions.Ā  It’s gone so far that I’m surprised Hilton Honors hasn’t limited these gold-standard certs more.

I currently hold five FNCs, while my wife holds four.Ā  We have another four on the way based on our current Amex welcome offer spending.Ā  We’ll take our time meeting those minimum spend requirements, as each card has a six-month period to accomplish the threshold.Ā  That way, those four certs will be good much later into 2027.

The next cert expires in June, and I’m excited for the upcoming stay where I’m using this one.Ā  Summer plans will take care of a few other certs.Ā  Stay tuned for more on these.

IHG One Rewards

IHG has multiple cert types depending on the type of Chase IHG card one holds.Ā  We each hold the Premier card and have the “flex” version which allows us to top off with an unlimited amount of points, a unique aspect of this IHG cert type.Ā Ā Our two certs are unhelpfully staggered with expirations several months apart.Ā  This means we only get a few months to redeem these single nights on an adjacent two-night stay.

The wife’s expires in early June, and we’ll have no problem using that in conjunction with another trip – probably the one where I’m using a Hilton Honors cert soon.Ā  Current pricing reflects I won’t need to add any IHG points for the reservation.Ā  I’m happy about that, as I prefer maximizing my IHG points on fourth-night-free stays.

Marriott Bonvoy

For better or worse, Marriott has a fairly-wide variety of free night certs.Ā  Luckily, our situation is relatively simple.Ā  We have two 85k-point certs expiring in the fall.Ā  That’s plenty of time, but Marriott certs aren’t as transferrable as others in our experience.Ā  We’ll have to carefully plan so we don’t miss out on maximizing these.Ā  More concerning is we have no clear need for them at this point.Ā  The fall will come up quickly.Ā  Stay tuned!

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham’s program doesn’t offer free night certs in the traditional sense.Ā  But, in my view, I think it’s healthiest to consider all of Wyndham’s points as certs with a four-year expiration.Ā  That’s because Wyndham points expire 48 months after they’re earned – the worst points expiration policy out of the major hotel loyalty programs.Ā  Transfers in and out of the Caesars Rewards program can refresh that expiration, but just a bit.Ā  Members are limited to 30k of transfers annually, with a very occasional/not reliable bump to this limit.

My points next expire at the end of January 2028.Ā  The wife’s are good until the end of July 2028.Ā  We’ll be doing plenty of Caesars Rewards and maybe a few Club Wyndham redemptions well before then.

Conclusion

Additionally, we have plenty of FNC-like opportunities via the various hotel credits from our Amex Platinum, Citi Strata Elite, and Chase Sapphire Reserve cards.Ā  Put these together with the various free night certs above, and we’ll hardly touch our hotel point balances for our moderate-at-most travel needs.Ā  Indeed, this is a good problem, one we’ll keep signing up for each year.

How’s your free night cert situation right now?
