Greece to Reopen Borders for Vaccinated and COVID-Negative Travelers
Greece has announced that it will open its borders in May, with limitations. People who are vaccinated against COVID-19, have antibodies or test negative will be able to travel to Greece this summer, said Tourism Minister Harry Theocharis. He added that the country is opening its borders on May 14.
Tourism is a major part of the Greek economy. The country has led calls for an EU-wide vaccination certificate to help unlock travel. To help prepare the country for visitors, Theocharis said employees in the tourism industry would be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccines after the country’s vulnerable populations, Reuters reported.
Before the pandemic, over 30 million people visited Greece annually. Officials hope to have at least half that number of tourists this year. That’s why they are trying to kick start tourism in time for summer. According to the UN World Tourism Organization, 2020 was the worst year for global tourism, with only 7,4 million people travelling to Greece.
“The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and its Members praise the Greek government for its tremendous efforts and strategic steps taken to restart international travel,” said Gloria Guevara, President and CEO.
Few other countries such as Estonia and Georgia in Europe, or Seychelles which is a popular destination, allow travelers to visit if they have received a full dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Thanks for the article. How confident should we be this will proceed as scheduled for Americans? On May 14th? Actual details very limited, when will we hear more?
I’m unclear whether this means that Greece will open its borders to vaccinated Americans. Do you have any insight into this?
Thanks!
