How I Saved 21% Off the Absolute Lowest Price on a GoPro: Greentoe Money Saving Tool Review!

Greentoe Review – Money Saving Tool

You get what you pay for don’t you? I would say the answer is “YES” for most people, however readers of this site always seek to pay less for the best. Naysayers would say that you lose something when you pay less all of the time, but we want to have our cake and to eat it too! Can we do it?

Money saving tool Greentoe basically says we can so I figured I would give it a try. My goals were to make sure I saved money, had a quality experience and of course got the product that I wanted and ordered. Did it happen? Let’s get into my full Greentoe review!

What Is Greentoe?

Greentoe is a name your own price service which allows you to name a price on various electronics and connects you with authorized sellers. The key here is that all of the items are sold in the same way/condition you would expect from Best Buy and Amazon. New and with warranty.

After an exhaustive search I decided I wanted a GoPro Hero 7 Black camera for my travels. GoPro has a trade-in program allowing you to get this camera for $300 if you send in an old camera, however that is a hassle and I wanted to beat this price without the need for sending in an old camera. 

To start my buying process I did the normal search of major retailers. Many retailers like Amazon and Best Buy had the camera for $349 plus tax or around $378 including tax. Seeing how the prices were pretty much the same everywhere, I signed up for Greentoe to get a better price after reading a small blurb about it on Running with Miles. I was excited to finally give it a try. 

Greentoe Review – Using & Initial Offer

Note: In this section I am using screenshots from today where the average price of $393.98 is a bit higher than it was ($349) when I bought due to a sale. I didn’t take screenshots when buying, but these should simulate what I saw. All other screenshots are from my actual purchase.

Starting the purchase:

To start my Greentoe purchase, I opened the app and navigated to the Hero 7 Black. The app showed me the lowest available online price from a reputable retailer along with the average. It also showed me how likely my initial offer of $276 was to be accepted.

As you can see, my offer was and is likely not to get accepted, but I went ahead with it anyway. You can always update it later, so you might as well try to get the best price. After selecting my price, I confirmed my shipping address and how long I wanted the offer to be good for. (2-7 days) I chose 2 days.

You can opt not to include payment information on your first offer, however I included my credit card to pay for the purchase. Merchants can choose to ignore your offer without payment information, so I included mine since I actually wanted the camera!

Greentoe Review – The Counter Offer

Just minutes after submitting my offer for I received the following email from a Greentoe customer service representative:

Hi Shawn, 

I have some great news on your Greentoe purchase offer. We can save you $48! 

The lowest price online for the GoPro HERO7 Black is $348 
That price is plus tax depending on where you live. 

If you raise your offer to $300, it will get accepted instantly and the total savings compared to Amazon will be at least $48 and even more if Amazon charges tax in your state. This $300 price we got you is the TOTAL AMOUNT that you will be charged (including shipping). 

Please let me know by replying to this email or changing your price here. 

If you have any questions, feel free to reply and I’ll get back to you right away.

Nice! I had pretty much known that $300 was being accepted for this item, but I still wanted to do better. Knowing that $276 wasn’t going to work, I upped my offer a bit to $291. This time there was silence for a few hours until I received this:

Hi Shawn,

Our system just completed a final check with our network of retailers. At this point, the lowest price for the HERO7 Black is $300.00 . Based on historical data and our system’s predictability analysis, we don’t expect this price to go lower. So, if you are interested in saving money, we highly suggest you increase your offer to $300.00 before the price goes up or the inventory is sold to someone else. 

Please Note: The retailer does not charge tax in NV and shipping is free! The total price you will pay is $300

Well then, they didn’t beat around the bush. I guess I could have seen if $296-$299 would have been accepted, but I trusted the rep and upped my offer to $300. It was immediately accepted by a merchant! 

Greentoe Review – Shipping Process

Greentoe and the merchant didn’t mess around with this order! I received my “accepted” email at 12:33pm Pacific on February 8 and the “shipped” email came about 3 1/2 hours later.

Here are some key takeaways from the shipping:

• The order shipped via UPS Ground from the New York area and arrived on 2/15/19 requiring a signature. It took one week, but it had to travel across country.
• The box came with only the GoPro package in it. There wasn’t a packing slip nor any Greentoe or merchant branding.
• Greentoe asks that customers not share the merchant info, so I am leaving that out. However, I did have full contact information for the merchant in case of an issue. This merchant is also an authorized retailer for GoPro and thus my warranty should be perfect as promised.

Credit Card Warranties/Protections

While I haven’t tested this 100%, I do believe additional warranty protections from a credit card would apply even though you are billed through Greentoe. If you have any knowledge of how this works then let us know in the comments, but in this case Greentoe is facilitating the transaction similar to eBay and thus any protections should apply in theory. 

Conclusion

Greentoe is yet another tool I will continue to use when looking to save on purchases. In this scenario I saved 21% over the cheapest price including tax at the time of my purchase and prices have actually risen since then. While no money saving tool will work 100% of the time, I’ll add Greentoe to my short list of tools to check given my overall positive buying experience.
