Your Hawaii Vacation Will Have to Wait Until October

Hawaii had planned a September 1 start for a program that would allow out-of-state visitors to bypass Hawaii’s strict 14-day quarantine upon arrival by presenting a negative COVID-19 test at the airport. Now the plan has been delayed until at least October, Hawaii Gov. David Ige said on Tuesday.

“We will continue to monitor the conditions here in Hawaii as well as key markets on the mainland to determine the appropriate start date for the pre-travel testing program,” Ige said, Hawaii News Now reports.

This is the second delay since the program was first announced in June. Since then we have seen cases spike around the country, with several states even reporting record daily deaths.

The announcement will affect visitors who were planning their Hawaii vacations around the September reopening and probably already bought airline tickets to the islands. The quarantine began back in March, and the latest extension means much of the year will be wiped out as far the tourism industry is concerned.

COVID-19 in Hawaii

Hawaii has seen a new wave of cases recently, although the state has fared much better than most around the country. Hawaii only had a total of 900 cases between February and June. But since early July, is has seen a surge of new cases. More than 300 cases were reported on a single day last week and yesterday 134 new cases were announced. So far, Hawaii has had 5,349 total cases and 41 deaths.

Hawaii also reinstituted a ban on social gatherings and other restrictions on Oahu, which has seen the most cases of the state’s coronavirus.

  1. well hopefully they’ll realize they shot themselves in the foot by keeping visitors from coming there ,what other economy do they have ?basically a welfare state without tourism ,my brother lives on a Oahu and told me half of Hawaii is on welfare and food stamps so as it is

  2. So Hawaii is closed when coronavirus cases are low and it’s closed when coronavirus cases are spiking. Make up your mind Iggy.

  3. The Governor is incompetent. He thinks the Federal government is going to bail the state out. The virus is not going to go away and no one is going to take a vaccine for something that has a 99.98% survival rate. Let’s call it what it is… the new flu and move on.

    • I agree. He can wreck his own economy but he should be allowed to benefit from taxpayer dollars from folks he doesn’t even want in his state.

If he wants to keep Hawaii closed, so be it, but taxpayers should have to fork over the $$$ to keep them afloat. Choices have consequences.

      • I agree with you 100% and that stands true for every state with their hand out right now because their economy is faltering most of them were mismanaged from way before covid and then they kept their economies closed down so what did they think was going to happen ??don’t look for other people to pay your bills for you

  4. In October, most likely they will announce November and so on and so on. This is crazy. Hawaii will be bankrupt soon.
