The Hilton Surpass Targeted Offer For Young Adults – Large Statement Credit
PDX Deals Guy’s college aged child was recently targeted for an unusual offer from Hilton and American Express. We have long believed that targeted offers mean something better than the regular public offers out there, right? Well this one was targeted but not necessarily better. I wouldn’t suggest it for someone with ample spend, or for a regular reader, but it is interesting and may be better for some people. It does seem like an offer they are targeting at the younger crowd and it is a heck of a lot better than that T-shirt I got in college for signing up for a card 😃.
Details Of The Targeted Offer
The offer is pretty straight forward. You spend $500 at a Hilton hotel with the card and you get a $500 statement credit. It could be for room rates or for incidentals while staying at a Hilton hotel. That is one hell of a college pool party right there!
You also have 12 months to complete the spending versus only 3 months for the regular offers. The $95 annual fee is not waived.
The Current Public Offer
The current public offer for the Amex Surpass comes with 200,000 points worth around $900 but that requires a lot of spend.
- You earn 150,000 points after $2,000 in spend within the first 3 months.
- You can then earn an additional 50,000 points after spending $10,000 within the first 6 months ($8,000 more).
- This spend will count towards the yearly $15K free night spend award as well.
- The $95 annual fee is not waived.
This offer is the more valuable offer for sure but it requires a ton more spend, $9,500 more to be exact. That may be tough for a young adult to manage.
Final Thoughts
It is interesting to see Amex and Hilton targeting young adults with a specific offer that is much easier to achieve. I would still say the public offer is better since even young adults should be able to hit $2,000 in spend within the first 3 months. Those 150,000 points are worth around $675 which surpasses the $500 offered here. And it isn’t restricted to spending it at a Hilton hotel either.
I could see why some would find this offer attractive though. It seems like an easy $500, well $405 after paying the annual fee. But that is what Amex is counting on. They are hoping that these young adults don’t crunch the numbers, grab the easy money and get sucked into the Amex and Hilton ecosystem. Well done on their part.
I tried to click through to see if I could get the offer to populate but I was unable to do so. If you would like this offer check your email for the subject line: earn up to $500 back towards your upcoming Hilton stays.
If you have a young adult in the family be sure to discuss offers like this with them and how they should always crunch the numbers. What sounds like an easy win, and a great deal, may not be that great once you really sit down and work it out.

Oh gosh, I remember the T-shirt deal. The table was right there in the student union and everyone was filling out paper applications for a free t-shirt – how’s that for privacy and security? That said, I don’t know whether it was the rep or someone else who said “just make up any number”, but I’m not so sure they got a lot of valid applications out of it either way.
Haha those and the blanket at sports stadiums etc. I may or may not have put in some random names on those when I was a younger man 🙂
