You Can Now Transfer Promotion Iberia Avios to BA… So Should You?

Iberia had an incredible promotion recently, giving out super cheap Avios. They had a bonus of 9,000 Avios for every ticket booked on Iberia.com from June 21, 2018 till June 24, 2018. If you didn’t know about it, then you missed it already, and this post won’t apply to you. But let’s see what’s changed.

Promotion Avios Restrictions

These Iberia Avios were super cheap to acquire, thank to $20-$30 flights that were available during the promotion. That means that they also come with restrictions. Here’s two main restrictions that these Avios have in the terms:

  • Promotional Avios must be redeemed by December 1, 2018 (you just need to book by that date, but can travel after 12/1/18)
  • If you transfer these Avios to British Airways “you will have a negative balance in the Iberia Plus programme” once they are not used by 12/1/18 and considered expired.

Transferring Promo Iberia Avios to British Airways

At first, transferring these Iberia Avios to your British Airways Executive Club account was not possible. So the transfer restriction was kind of useless, since it was something that couldn’t be done anyway.

But sometime in the last couple of days Iberia has made a change and it now lets you go through with the process. There’s no updated terms yet, so the old restrictions should still apply.

Also keep in mind that for this transfer to happen, you must have had both accounts open for at least 90 days. If you do not have a British Airways Executive Club account, I suggest you open one now, so you have time to do this transfer before December 1st.

Should You Transfer?

While the transfer is now possible, I would still be cautious. The terms on the bonus Iberia Avios earned from the promotion still stand. So technically you could end up with a negative balance on your Iberia account on December 1st, even if you use up the transferred Avios on a British Airways redemption.

I would say that scenario is unlikely though, since Iberia made this change proactively. It’s still better to wait until there’s some confirmation, either through updated terms, or a representative.

Then the second part of the question is which Avios make more sense for you. British Airways has higher fees usually. But, especially now when many people have redeemed their Avios on Iberia, BA should have the better availability.

Conclusion

This change makes the points more versatile since you can pool them together with your British Avios. But I would suggest waiting for some kind of confirmation from Iberia before using them.

Let us know what you thing and if it makes sense for you to transfer to BA.

  1. It is worth noting that when IB Plus and BA Executive Club eventually migrate to the common Avios platform, the balances belonging to an individual’s IB Plus and BAEC accounts will be merged into a single balance. Once the migration is complete, members will be able redeem from and add credit to their single Avios “bank account” from both or any one of the programmes they belong to. However, IB Plus and BAEC will continue as two very distinct programmes.

So a negative balance may catch up with you in the not too distant future.

  2. I already used my 90k for flights to Madrid in 2019. My question is: what do I do about the 10 flights I booked for Dec ’18 for flights that I won’t use? Do I cancel now? Later? Or just be a no show for them?

  3. We just want our points. I got mine quickly. My wife is still waiting on hers depsite sending a copy of the flights, her passport copy, and her Chase account showing the charges on her card. We wait, wait, wait.

Also, waiting on Chase deposit her last 25K on the BA card. We wait, wait, wait.
