IHG Extending Free Night Certificates

IHG Extending Free Night Certificates Until December 2021

Update 5/19/21:

IHG has kicked the can a little bit down the field on more time for their members.  This time around they have extended some free night certificates until December 31, 2021.  They have also extended all points expiration until at least the end of the year as well. HT DoC

Update 1/17/21:

IHG has done another extension for some of their free night certificates. All IHG Rewards Club free night certificates with an original expiration date in 2021 are having their expiration date extended to 31 December 2021. This is regardless of when in 2021 a certificate was set to expire. These changes will be made by February 15, 2021. This is only for certificates that have not been extended in the past already.

Original Post

As the coronavirus pandemic still drags along, airlines and hotels have been accommodating customers with extensions for points and miles expiration, status and free night certificates.

IHG was rumored to extend free night certificates expiring before December 31, 2020. The extension would be for an extra eight months, until August, 2021. But yesterday several data points started rolling in that certificates were being extended. Now everyone is seeing their certificates extended just yet, but they should be rolling in.

Earlier this year IHG extended anniversary and free night certificates through December 31, 2020.

Conclusion

With many people still not feeling comfortable with travel, or not being able to travel because of restrictions, this should be welcome news. If you have expiring IHG free nights, check your accounts to see if expiration dates have been updated.

  1. Looks like they extended one of my certificate expirations from 12 to 18 months. A lot more generous than I think we all thought at the beginning of December!

    Current certs:
    Reissued Cert: Book 1 between 04/02/2020 – 08/31/2021
    Anniversary Cert: Book 1 between 12/24/2020 – 07/02/2022

  2. On my IHG app, instead of receiving an extension (so far), I received an extra certificate that is valid from April 2, 2020 to August 31, 2021… strange. So now I have 5 free nights between my 2 IHG cards (older and Premier card). Hope they all get extended though…

    • The “new” one is the extension. The expiring one is likely to be removed.

Under account activity you’re likely to see this. Date may vary.

  3. Not showing up in our 2 IHG accounts. I contacted IHG live chat rep, who said I should wait for updates “later this year”! I reminded the live chat rep that “later this year” consists of just 16 more days! Fairly ridiculous, compared to Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt just to name 3 competitors.
