Island Paradises in Vegas
Las Vegas continues to be on a path of slow recovery. Restrictions are still in place on capacity and masks are mandated in all public spaces. In many cases bars are closed too and conferences have largely been cancelled as has international tourism. It’s a tough road ahead.
Still, there is some good news. MGM Resorts International recently announced the historic Polynesian themed Mirage Resort & Casino will reopen on August 27, 2020. Considering this 3,044 room hotel has been shuttered since March that is exciting! I’ll make sure to cover the hotel when its open again, but I thought it would be fun to see what it looks like right before reopening. I recently headed down there (and even got kicked off the property) to see how it looks right now. Take a look below!
Tropicana Las Vegas Delayed
While we got the good news about Mirage, we also received some bad news from Tropicana (forever known to me as “The Island of Las Vegas”). My childhood hangout has pushed back its planned opening from September 1, 2020 to September 17, 2020. Let’s hope they are able to stick to that date. I was booked for opening night, but that is not going to happen now.
@TropLV not opening September 1. My opening night reservation is cancelled. 😔 Looks like 1st date available now is September 17. @LasVegasLocally @VitalVegas pic.twitter.com/jg5kK7GbBQ

Bottom Line
Las Vegas’ two tropical themed hotels are following different paths, but one will finally reopen. The Mirage was looking a little overgrown when I visited, but it is truly great news to know that the Volcano, atrium and other Mirage goodies will soon be open to guests. Unfortunately the other tropical themed Vegas hotel Tropicana will be closed for at least another month and I am not holding out high hopes for it to return even then.
