JetBlue Plans to Hike Spirit Fares
When JetBlue revealed plans of the merger with Spirit Airlines is said the deal would make the two airlines more competitive and better able to face larger carriers. JetBlue has also said that it doesn’t plan any substantial fare increases.
However, newly revealed details from internal documents, show a different story. A Law360 report reveals that JetBlue plans to raise airfares on routes flown by Spirit Airlines between 24% and 40% if the proposed merger is approved. The information was mistakenly made public in improperly redacted documents that were released as part of a pending court case.
Portions that were intended to be redacted were viewable from the documents posted to the public docket just by copying and then pasting the text in a new document.
The court case in question is a civil lawsuit brought by travelers aiming to block JetBlue’s $3.6 billion takeover of Spirit. This is separate from the U.S. Department of Justice’s lawsuit to stop the merger between the two airlines.
The revelations could jeopardize JetBlue’s proposed purchase of Spirit Airlines, which is being scrutinized by the U.S. Department of Justice. The DOJ has said that the deal would “lead to higher fares and fewer seats, harming millions of consumers on hundreds of routes.” And these document seems to support that assertion.
