Kroger 4x
Kroger runs their 4x fuel rewards promotion several times each year. Right now, they have brought it back through December 6. For those unfamiliar with the program, you normally get $.10 off per gallon of gas for every $100 spent a Kroger stores. During this promotion a $100 gift card purchase gives $.40 off per gallon of gas or 4x the normal amount.
You can use your Fuel Rewards for up to $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons of gas. Unfortunately this promotion doesn’t work on variable load gift cards, however it does work on fixed value Visa/MC gift cards along with almost all merchant cards.
Tips
Obviously to maximize this promotion you want to get as close to 35 gallons of gas as possible. To maximize you can:
- Fill up the tanks on multiple vehicles at the same time. We do this all of the time. Just make sure not to put the handle back on the pump or it will reset the transaction.
- Use fuel canisters to get extra gas and then use it to fill up other vehicles at home.
Math
If you buy a $100 Visa/MC gift card with a $5.95 fee, you will earn the points or cash back on the card you use, plus $.40 off per gallon. The break even point is about 15 gallons of gas. I use a card which pays 5% cash back at grocery stores when buying these, making it about a $13 moneymaker overall.
Conclusion
I love these Kroger 4x gift card promotions since they are pretty easy to maximize and help save a few dollars on gas. The Visa/MC gift cards are also easily loaded to Bluebird/Serve which makes everything easier as well.
