La Quinta Courtesy Points Extension

Yesterday as part of my roundup, I included a link to a post by Points with a Crew about extending La Quinta points. Despite La Quinta’s website saying that any activity will extend points, it has become evident over the past year that points earned through surveys do not extend the expiration date.

About 18 months ago the company had a pretty neat promotion where it was fairly easy to earn thousands of points, meaning that many of us are now seeing those expire. I am not in a rush to stay in a La Quinta, but I hate to see good points go to waste!

After reading Dan’s article, I checked my family’s three accounts and all of them were expiring within the next couple of weeks. So I took his advice and tweeted @LQ on Twitter asking for some guidance. They responded quickly that my request had been forwarded.

This morning I received a very nice email from La Quinta. Just like with Dan, they decided to add 10 points to each of our accounts to keep them active for another 18 months. They also suggested other ways to keep points active in the future. Here is the text:

As a one-time courtesy, I have added 10 points to each of your family’s accounts – to re-set the 18 month window of activity.

Normally we do require some type of point transaction to keep your accounts active.  This could include staying at one of our locations to earn points or using your points for a free or discounted room. You could also use your points to purchase gift cards, magazine subscriptions and also donate to Hotels for Heroes.  You also have the option of purchasing points on Points.com.  $11 will purchase 1,000 points.

Will This Work For You

Between Dan’s post yesterday and this one, I am sure they are receiving quite a few requests. Hopefully they will extend this courtesy to everyone, but if not, I thought the information above would be useful to some people who otherwise would watch their points expire. It seems like an $11 purchase from Points.com might be the easiest way, although I would weight that option to see if it really makes any sense. If not, then maybe magazines or gift cards could be worthwhile if you have enough points.

Conclusion

I really like when companies are friendly and helpful. While I still contend that La Quinta should extend the expiration date for any points earning, at least they have stepped up in this scenario. Have you had success getting your La Quinta points extended? Let me know in the comments!

  1. How can you check when your points expire? I’ve logged into my LaQuinta account online and can’t find WHERE they say when your points are set to expire.

  2. Nope. When I realized that my points were going to expire soon, and I had no stays planned in the near future, I donated 5000 points to Hotels for Heroes. It would take me a year or two to earn enough for a free night, since LQ isn’t my first or second choice-although they are always a decent option. So rather than jump through hoops to keep my points, I chose to donate them to a good cause. No regrets about it.

  3. how do you determine expiry on a La Quinta account? I can’t seem to find the date in account activity area.

I think I’m in the same boat – got the slots points and then one survey
