Maldives to Offer Visitors Vaccines on Arrival

Maldives has a new initiative to incentivize visitors and boost its tourism sector. The island nation will soon offer visitors vaccinations on arrival according to its tourism minister.

The archipelago in South Asia, renowned for its tropical beaches and crystal clear waters, is heavily dependent on tourism. It accounts for about 67% of its gross domestic product (GDP). So the Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge effect on the country’s economy.

Maldives is currently open to all vaccinated tourists plus any others who show proof of a negative Covid-19 test result, taken not more than 3 days before arrival. Now it has launched a campaign called “3V,” for ‘Visit, Vaccinate, Vacation.’ Once all local residents have been offered the chance to take a vaccine, shots will become available for anyone traveling to the country as well. A timeline for the visitor vaccination rollout has not been announced yet.

So far, around 53% of the island nation’s approximately 530,000 residents have received their first dose, according to Reuters. Maldivian Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom said that 90% of front-line tourism staff have received their first dose.

Mausoom added that “the main idea of tourism being open is to provide a reasonably safe tourism with minimum inconvenience. So once the country gets vaccinated, then we will move on to ‘3V’ tourism,” as reported by Condé Nast Traveler.
