Manhattan Casino Bid Includes Giant Ferris Wheel Near UN Headquarters
An empty site near the United Nations headquarters in Midtown is the latest possible location for a casino.
The owner of land that covers three blocks on the waterfront, will partner with Mohegan, the casino and resort operator, to compete for one of three casino licenses expected to be granted by state gambling regulators in the greater New York City area.
The site was part of a former Con Edison power plant, from East 38th to 41st Streets, between the East River and First Avenue.
The proposed Freedom Plaza will introduce the world’s first museum dedicated to the celebration of freedom and democracy. Freedom Plaza will also serve the community at large with the availability of a substantial green area, a state-of-the-art performance venue, iconic Ferris Wheel, a 1,000+ room first-class hotel, two residential towers and a mostly underground casino.
The immediate surrounding area is largely undeveloped in terms of real estate, providing an opportunity for access without undue disruption. Connected to the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive and numerous bus stops, Freedom Plaza is a short walk from the 34th Street ferry and Grand Central Station. The development team will also explore providing additional dedicated ferry service.
Soloviev joins a other bids that have already announced partnerships with casino operators with proposed locations in Coney Island in Brooklyn, Hudson Yards, 5th Avenue and Times Square in Manhattan, Willets Point in Queens and Nassau County on Long Island.

I always wondered what that piece of land would be as it’s been empty for quite some time. Great to see some potential development there (I live in NYC).
A Ferris wheel near the UN. Make sense as many circuses have clowns, rides, etc.
