Possible Changes for Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card
Marriott currently offers four credit card options, with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card being the only premium offering. The card has a $450 annual fee and gives you some additional benefits, including up to $300 in Marriott statement credits, status and more.
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card currently has a welcome offer of 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points and up to $200 Back at U.S. Restaurants.
But we could soon see a major revamp for this product, and as you would expect from recent Amex developments, a substantial fee increase. It’s important to note that the information about these changes comes from a survey that American Express has sent out to a select group of customers. So it could be nothing. Nonetheless, let’s see what this survey suggests, and what to expect if the refresh actually happens.
What Might Change
The survey provides some clues as to what some of these changes might be. Here are some of the highlights:
- Cardmembers will receive automatic Platinum Status (instead of Gold) and the option to earn Titanium with $75K spend. That’s a big boost for those who stay at Marriott properties often, since Gold status is quite useless.
- Annual Free Night Award and option to earn another Free Night with $50K spend in a calendar year. These Free Night Awards can be redeemed at properties up to 85K points per night (instead of 50K). So that opens the opportunity for more luxurious properties around the world.
- 25 Elite Night Credits (instead of 15).
- Up to $300 in statement credits for dining purchases, $25 per month (instead of $300 in Marriott statement credit). That should be easier to use, but it sucks that it might be spread out monthly.
- $650 Annual Fee (up from $450). That’s a big downside and probably kills the extra value offered.
If these changes happen, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card will still continue to earn 6x points on purchases Marriott Bonvoy hotels, 3x on dining at U.S. restaurants and on airfare purchased directly from airlines or through Amex Travel. You would also earn 2X point on all other purchases.
