You Can Now Check If Your Data Was Stolen in Marriott Data Breach

Marriott International revealed back in November that up to 500 million guests’ information may have been accessed as part of a breach of its Starwood guest reservation database. That number was lowered to under 400 million later on, but it is still one of the largest breaches we have seen to date. There’s already a couple of lawsuits filed against the hotel chain.

Now, finally, Marriott is will let you check if you’re a victim of the Starwood hack. The service is being provided through security firm OneTrust. They will ask for some personal information, like your name, email address, as well as the last six-digits of your passport number.

This took a bit longer that expected. Usually you would prefer to know right away if your personal data has been stolen so you can take the necessary steps to prevent any further damage. Marriott has already said that it will pay for new passports for those whose numbers were exposed.

However, it’s strange that Marriott is providing this service through a third party and asking you to enter personal information on a website that you’ve probably never heard of in the past. Also this tool will not give you a result straight away. You have to wait for a response, but Marriott doesn’t say how long that’ll take.
