New Type of Welcome Bonus for Amex Cards
American Express has launched new offers on select credit card with wording that we have never seen before.
Usually a credit card offer will state the bonus points or miles that you will receive upon approval. However, these new offers from American Express state that you will earn “up to” a certain amount of points.
Some people are seeing these types of offers for the Amex Platinum and Amex Gold credit cards at this link. The offers for each card are as follows:
- Amex Platinum Card: Up to 150,000 Membership Rewards® Points. Find out your welcome offer if you’re approved.
- Amex Gold Card: Up to 90,000 Membership Rewards® Points. Find out your welcome offer if you’re approved.
Here’s an image of the Amex Gold Card offer for “up to 90,000 Membership Rewards points”.
And here are the terms on these offers:
After you submit your application and before you accept the Card (if you are approved), we will tell you the exact amount of Membership Rewards® Points which you are eligible to earn, which will be an amount up to 90,000 points.
So what happens when you actually apply for one of these offers? Here’s an example of the message you receive after applying for “up to 90K points) on the Amex Gold Card. In this case the bonus turns out to be just 60,000 Membership Rewards points.
The good thing is that you still have the option to withdraw your application with no impact to your credit score. Otherwise, you can accept the card with the offer shown and it could result in a hard pull.
It’s worth noting that these offers are only showing on select link, and not directly on the credit card pages or through referral links. Even on the link we posted above, some people might still see the regular offer with a fixed number of points.
