United MileagePlus and BP Driver Rewards have a new partnership that could be pretty useful to you if you spend a lot of money on gas and can make use of United Miles. Earlier this week we covered a new partnership between Marriott and United. This program allows you to earn up to 3 miles per gallon on BP fuel purchases. You also get a sign-up bonus of 200 miles. You can also use your miles for discounts at the pump. Click here to sign up.

The Earning Structure is as follows
- 1 mile per gallon of regular or premium BP fuel purchased when you enter your Driver Rewards loyalty ID or swipe your Driver Rewards card at the pump
- 2 miles per gallon of regular BP fuel purchased if you’ve linked a credit or debit card
- 3 miles per gallon of premium BP fuel purchased if you’ve linked a credit or debit card
Using United Miles for Gas Discounts
You can use 60 miles per gallon to save $0.50 per gallon by swiping your linked credit or debit card at the pump. You will still earn miles for each gallon, even when you’ve used miles on the same purchase. Visit united.com/BP for more information on this program.
Conclusion
In deciding whether to choose to earn United miles in lieu of BP Driver Rewards, you may want to consider the price of gas. If gas is around 1.50/Gallon, then to get 10 Cents off per gallon, you’d need to purchase 66 Gallons of gas. That same 66 gallons could earn you about 135 Miles. If gas were say 2.20/gallon, you’d probably be better off sticking with the BP Rewards since it is a percentage of spend. Also, if you have a small gas tank, the miles might be a better choice since you won’t get as much value out of the 10 cents off per gallon. You biggest value might be to purchase BP Gift Cards, I’m guessing you could pay with a discounted gift card and earn 1 mile per gallon, though don’t quote me on that, just yet. While I only received the email about this new program on March 22nd, Doctor of Credit posted about it weeks ago, you can check out their comments section for more data points.
