New Year's Eve Celebrations Around the World

New Year’s Eve Celebrations Around the World

New Year’s Eve is usually celebrated with with big parties and fireworks across major cities around the world. The most popular celebrations are also a travel destination for many.

But as we are just over a week away from New Year’s Eve, another Covid-19 surge has put a stop to some of those celebration plans. In some parts of the world celebrations have been canceled, while others are taking more precautions.

For now, the world famous Times Square celebration in New York City is still going on as planned. NYC’s mayor said that the only talks going on right now are about whether to add more safety measures. Las Vegas still plans to launch fireworks from the top of eight hotel-casinos on the Strip for eight minutes, and a downtown Las Vegas fireworks show will also be held.

In Dubai, the pyrotechnics at the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, are still planned to go on as usual. Sydney Australia is also going ahead with plans, but you’ll need tickets to attend this year.

But some other cities around the world have already announced they are canceling their normal New Year’s Eve celebration or scaling them down.

In Germany, starting on December 28, New Year’s Eve gatherings are prohibited. That means no big fireworks or gathering spots in popular destinations such as Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt. There’s a maximum of groups of 10 people announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Public New Year’s Eve celebrations in Scotland will be canceled as well. A planned New Year’s Eve event in London has been canceled over Covid concerns. Instead, a program will be broadcast at midnight on BBC One, London’s mayor Khan said. Paris has canceled its traditional fireworks display over the Champs-Elysées Avenue and Rome is yet another European city to cancel New Year’s Eve celebrations.

In New Delhi in India, there’s a ban on all social, cultural, political and festival gatherings until further notice because of a rise in Covid-19 cases. New Year’s Eve celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s party capital, have also been canceled for the same reason.

If you plan on traveling for New Year’s Eve, and especially if you plan to attend any major celebrations, make sure you check if there are any changes. That doesn’t include just the event, but also travel requirements that are continuously changing in many parts of the world.

  1. Why is anything being cancelled? Why are we even still talking about this? The official symptoms are a runny nose and a cough! this is barely a cold a at this point. What are we all afraid of? Oh, right, we might make someone who is high risk or unvaccinated a bit more sick than a runny nose. OMG!!! everyone run for the hills, cancel your plans, put your life on hold for another year. So, as far as the unvaccinated people we are all so concerned about, very simple, stop being concerned. It’s their choice. Why would anyone be ok with disrupting their life because someone is making a choice not to be vaccinated? As for the ‘oh no, you might infect a high risk person’…also very simple…if you fit one of the very clearly defined risk groups, you can stay at home or wear a mask or tell people you don’t want to see them for the holiday or you can exercise your own free will and go out to eat. Nobody is dying anymore – at least no more than would die from the flu in a bad year, no more than die in drunk driving accidents, if you’re fortunate enough to live in a city run by democrats you have a higher risk of being shot or beaten and robbed or making terrible political decision based on what Twitter deems popular. Let’s face it, the virus should be over and done with and we should be living normal lives. The words and phrases Lockdown, Mask mandate, Quarantine, Travel Restriction should be removed from the media other than to say they are all over. This is so pointless, we are accomplishing absolutely nothing. If we really cared about peoples’ health we should have spent the trillions developing non-opioid painkillers, we should have spent it on addressing the real epidemic – obesity. Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to fat-shame everyone who is fat (even though they are) and they pose the greatest burden to our health system and highest risk group for COVID. We would completely ban cigarettes if the government really wanted to force people to be healthy. I understand the reason for caution in the beginning, but at this point we are fighting the dumbest, most pointless battle against a non-existent enemy. The term ’tilting at windmills’ should be shouted at any politician who continues to put us in fear of what is now an absurdly weak virus.

I wish all the travel sites would start reporting on the facts of the current situation, the actual risks beyond the ones people take every day getting our of bed (i.e. a runny nose) and call for an end to anything relating to COVID impacting our lives.
