My Wife's Application Spree Results - Round 2

My Wife’s Application Spree Results – Round 2

I decided to go on another mini application spree for my wife since we have pretty much wrapped up the spend on her last application spree.  I have been trying to hoard Delta miles, hub captive here, for an upcoming trip to Amsterdam and Brussels so that was one focus.  My other objective was to beef up on my flexible points and cash like points position.

Applications

Capital One Venture Card

I have been trying to get this elusive beast for myself or my wife for a little while now.  I had it once many years ago but she has never had it.  The increased bonus of 50,000 points worth $500 would have been nice.  We both currently have the Arrival+ so this was the next option.  I was planning on using it for international award ticket taxes and fees or some on property charges for our family trip to the Florida Keys in February.  Capital One still doesn’t like us and gave her the immediate denial.

Results: Denial

Citibank ThankYou Premier Card

There are currently no public links for this card with a sign up bonus.  My wife’s 24 month Citibank clock had just ended a few days earlier.  I was able to find a link on Doctor of Credit’s page that had a 50,000 point offer after $4,000 in spend within the first three months.   My plan was to use the points to book a non chain hotel in northern Michigan at 1.25 cents per point when going through their travel portal.  If not that then I will probably transfer the points to Virgin Atlantic, which have been moving up the list of my favorite miles.  She was instantly approved for the card with a $10,000 limit.

Gold Delta Skymiles Business Card by American Express

This Offer Has Ended

This one was strategically placed as the final application because American Express always seems to approve us.  I currently have the card so I referred her (better than the current public offer) which got me a 10,000 Skymiles bonus too! The offer is for 50,000 miles after $2,000 in spend within the first 3 months.  Then another 10,000 miles after $1,000 in additional spend over the first 6 months.  The annual fee is waived the first year. She will also get a $50 statement credit with any Delta purchase, hello $3 Pringles!

Her application went into pending, which I found interesting since she only had 3 credit cards with American Express at the time.  That put her under the maximum of 4 credit cards at one time (even though many are able to get 5 or 6).  After a few days I checked the Amex application status page and she had been approved!

Results: Approved

Conclusion

Not too bad overall.  For this spree she is going to earn 110,000 points after $7,000 in spend worth at least $1300.  Not a bad days work!

I would still love to be able to get the $500 bonus from Capital One but I may need to wait until we have an application cooling off period.  It has been tough sledding with them since we both got Spark Cash cards about a year ago.  The denials always say that we have too many recent applications/new accounts.

I was pretty confident she would get approved for the Amex Delta card since they seem to be the most lax of all of the banks right now.  Probably because of the amount of business they have been losing lately.

Citibank was another one I felt good about since she hasn’t gotten anything from them in about a year.  With their 24 month language they will be a one card per year bank for us.  American Airlines card one year, Thank You card the next.

Have you done any recent application sprees?  Let me know of your results in the comments section!

  1. My question is… How in the world do you keep up with spending the required amount on each card? I don’t want to buy things I don’t need. Bills, cable, electric, dining only get you so far.
Just curious if there are any tips out there?

    • You can increase spending by buying Visa Gift cards and turning them into money orders. There is gift card reselling, merchandise reselling on amazon or ebay etc. You can even fund some new bank accounts with credit cards that would count. But always go at your own pace and read up on these things before jumping in and start slowly.

  2. My plan was get 1 million AA miles in 2017. We are 90000 short . So I applied 7th citi AA , chase Marriott biz and Barclay red aviator for my husband .

    All 3 went pending .
Citi aa just have to call and got approved . Easy

Marriott biz , we wait , got the letter. call to verify identity and got approved .

Barclay red , got the letter, thought it was 24m rule Reddit recently someone posted about . Decided to give recon a call. Answered some basic and income question , move credit from arrival + , also approved . Very pleased about the outcome ultimately.

    • Nice haul!!! How did you get around the Citi AA 24 month rule to get 7 cards? Were you using the no 24 month language links over and over again?

      • Actually between two people we got total 13 citi AA personal card in 12m. 3 of 13 were public link without 24m . Rest of it were mailers we received.

          • Cap One doesn’t have 24 month language. Citi does but she was a few days beyond 24 months. Amex is once per lifetime and she has never had that card before. I hope that helps.

          • Sorry. I should have clarified. For Citi, how did Madison receive 13 AA bonuses? Did she have multiple Platinum Select cards and all of them did not have the Citi 24 Opened/Closed exclusionary language?

        • Awesome! Quick Question: for the AA cards that you were targeted for by mail, they did not contain any exclusionary language, correct? I have the personal and business Platinum Citi AA cards but was targeted by mail for gold. It does not contain 24 month exclusionary language but says that the bonus is not available to “existing Citi AAdvantage cardsmembers.” I assume I’m not eligible then.

Curious as to your success story.

  3. Got denied for the Chase BA, same reason, too many inquiries. Applied for a total of 7 cards preceding 12 months, only 1 Chase. Playing HUCA with their reconsideration.

  4. Btw, maybe it’s just me being unlucky but I was denied both BA Card issued by Chase and Marriott Business Card issued by Chase (supposedly they are not subject to 5/24) with the exact same explanation “ too many inquiries recently”. FICO 800+, high income, low utilization, but I am 12+/24. So… makes me wonder if they are now subject to 5/24 rule as well.

    • I just recently got the Marriott Business card with double digit apps this year. Have you applied for other Chase cards this year? They also don’t like the combo applications anymore from what I have read. I would give it another try in 5-6 months or so.

  5. You mention transferring the Citi TY points to BA, “If not that then I will probably transfer the points to Birtish Airways” how exactly do you accomplish this?

Last I checked they weren’t a transfer partner, thank you in advance.

    • You are correct Daniel, my mistake. I could have sworn they were but I have adjusted the article. Thanks again and my apologies.

  6. Thanks for sharing, always helpful to learn others’ experiences. I’m trying really hard to be in a cooling off period myself!

    • I tell myself that EVERY month – and then I fall into the app trap lol. It is kind of an addiction…hard to resist lol.

      • It sure can be an addiction. What I find harder to explain is the incredible high I get after a new card approval….
