Roundup of 5% Bonus Categories for Q2: Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend & Discover it
Chase Freedom, Discover It and Citi Dividend are the three major 5% cashback credit cards with rotating bonus categories. The second quarter categories are now live and you can activate them today. Let’s look at the Q2 categories for each card and see if we can spot some opportunities!
Discover it 2018 Q2 Bonus Categories
The Discover It card is paying 5% at grocery stores this quarter. Grocery stores are probably my favorite bonus category since it is so easy to rack up spend. Of course most of us have fairly significant grocery bills and most grocery stores sell a variety of gift cards as well. You can earn 5% back on up to $1,500 in purchases per Discover card. If you have more than one then you get to have even more fun. Remember at the most basic level grocery stores sell their own gift cards if you want a simple way to hit the $1,500. As long as you regularly shop there, then purchasing store gift cards works well. Click here to activate 5%.
Chase Freedom Q2 2018 Bonus Categories
Chase Freedom holders should very easily be able to max out Q2. As if Grocery and Chase Pay weren’t broad enough, Paypal is included! Basically, this means you can maximize the category by making almost any online purchase. You can (and should) activate the bonus now by clicking here, just be sure to do so before June 14. See our earlier post for full category details. The full 2018 calendar has not been released yet, but we’ll keep you posted when Chase announces the last two quarters.

Citi Dividend Q2 Bonus Categories
Citi Dividend is unique to either the Discover it or Chase Freedom cards since you can earn all of your cashback ($300) total any time during the year in whichever category you choose. Home Depot is a mega store where you can get almost anything you need for your home, they also sell third party gift cards. Furnishing Stores are defined as those that primarily sell furniture for homes. If you’re unable to max out spending this quarter, there are some great categories opportunities in the back end of the year including airfare, Best Buy and Department Stores. You can sign up for this quarter here and make sure you sign up prior to making a qualifying purchase.
The Dividend card isn’t available to the public anymore, but you may be able to product change over another card to it. You can find the calendar here.
Conclusion
You’re covered on gas in the first quarter, that’s for sure. None of these categories (except for Paypal maybe) are life changing, but there are a bunch of things that I am happy about. The Citi Dividend should be very easy to maximize this year and Discover has both groceries and restaurants this year. It’s also great to see more of the mobile payment apps with Chase Pay, hopefully this trend continues.
