Singapore Airlines Announces Changes

I woke up to an email for my KrisFlyer Account that Singapore Airlines and Silk Air have made some upcoming changes to their program. The changes are fairly minor with a couple of exceptions that could cost you a few dollars if you’re an economy flyer. First, they are introducing new fare classes across all cabins called Lite, Standard and Flexi. Basically, each cabin is now broken down into 2 or 3 fare classes.

These changes will go into effect on January 20, 2018. Tickets issued before January 20th will be subject to the old fare conditions, while tickets issued on or after January 20th will be based to the new fare conditions.

Added Fees

There will now be a $5 fee for advance seat selection (unless you’re flying with children or it’s within 48 hours of the flight) for those in economy on a “Lite” fare. Also, there is a new $8 fee for “Forward Zone” seats, these are closest to exits to allow for quicker disembarkation.

Other Changes

The rest of the changes are minor. There will be some name changes, some added fees for no-shows and a few changes to the amount of miles credited based on fare class. It seems there are some positive developments for those flying the “Flexi” fare class but it’s unlikely to affect many because it’s the most expensive for each booking. It’s like the refundable option for most flights.

Conclusion

There is nothing ground breaking here. If you’re flying a multi-segmented economy flight in the lower fare class, you could end up paying each fee multiple times. We never like to see added fees, but at least award redemptions didn’t get more expensive. People who are chasing status at the end of the year may be able to take advantage of their increased mileage accrual on certain tickets, so that’s a plus.
