Spain and Italy Could Keep Borders Closed
Spain and Italy are two of the hardest hit countries in Europe when discussing the pandemic. They are actually ranked second and third respectively in the world with 200,000 and 180,000 confirmed cases each. US hold the top spot with more than 760,000 cases.
Now the two European countries are drafting plans to reopen, as the numbers of cases have peaked. Spain and Italy are both top tourist destinations as well, so reopening the economy and the borders could be tricky. Opening up the country to tourists from all over the world brings the risk of a second wave of the outbreak, but the two countries also rely on billions from the tourism industry.
Marca reports that the Spanish government is working on a total resumption of activity and employment in two phases. The first phase would be for the productive sectors which will resume in the summer. The second phase can extend until Christmas. The latter phase includes the most affected sectors, such as tourism, culture, catering and air and sea transport.
For Italy, the full reopening could take even longer. Their plan comes in three phases. The first will take place later this month with the reopening of of agricultural and industrial companies. Then during phase two in May, the lockdown will end with obligations to wear masks and maintain social distance. Later in May bars, restaurants and other catering activities will open. Sporting events will also resume behind closed doors. Then comes phase three when schools will reopen in September, movie theaters in December and full opening of borders in March 2021.
