Spirit Airlines TSA Precheck
I am admittedly quite spoiled when I go to the airport. For example at my hometown airport LAS, I generally get through security in less than 5 minutes with TSA Precheck. I also don’t have to get radiated by a scanner, take off my shoes, take my laptop or liquids out or take off my belt. IT IS HEAVEN.
One of the biggest airlines in Las Vegas is Spirit. While some swear they will never fly them, I have actually had quite good experiences. For example, on my recent trip to San Diego, I found the staff to be among the friendliest in the skies, although the seats looked a bit like a military transport!
Either way Spirit often presents the best value for flying out of LAS on direct flights. One of the biggest issues I have had is the lack of TSA Precheck. Thankfully that has all changed. Yesterday the TSA announced the addition of 11 airlines to the Precheck program including Spirit.
11 New Airlines Added
Here is the full list of newly eligible airlines:
Aruba Airlines, Avianca, Boutique Airlines, Emirates, Key Lime Air, Miami Air International, Southern Airways Express, Spirit Airlines, Sunwing, Virgin Atlantic, and Xtra Airways.
With the addition of those 11, there are a total of 30 airlines which participate in the program. The other 19 are:
Aeromexico, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, American Airlines, Cape Air, Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa, OneJet, Seaborne Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin America, and WestJet.
Analysis
Spirit was the last major domestic carrier to not participate and thus this is great news. It is also nice to see more international airlines such as Virgin Atlantic and Avianca join the program. TSA Precheck makes the airport experience much better and it eases the burden on the TSA I believe as well.
Now that Spirit has TSA Precheck would you fly them or do you still avoid low cost carriers completely?
HT: I first saw, this on Twitter last night (but can’t remember who tweeted it) and TBB also linked to it today.
