Overseas Spectators Could Be Banned from Tokyo Olympics

The Olympics are the most popular sporting event in the world. The Tokyo Olympics, originally scheduled for 2020, will take place this year. People usually travel from all over the world to attend the event, and probably some of our reader are planning to do so as well.

But if you are already booking tour trips, make sure to check refund policies for your flights and hotel stays. Japan still has a travel ban in place, and it is likely that international travelers will not be allowed into the country for the Olympic Games.

The Mainichi newspaper reports that the Japanese government has begun preparations to host the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer without accepting overseas spectators. The number of local fans could also be limited inside venues. The newspaper cites a number of individuals involved in the discussions that took place today.

An official decision will likely be announced by March 25 when a nationwide torch relay will start. Hotels and tourism companies have asked the Japanese government to make a decision at an early stage so they can prepare accordingly.

There’s currently a state of emergency in the Tokyo region, the second since the start of the pandemic. It is set to expire on March 7, by it will be extended by two weeks. Coronavirus cases have dropped in the capital since hitting a record high in January, but officials are worried because the drop in infections appears to be plateauing.

Japan has effectively closed its borders to international travelers since last year. There are a few exclusions to the travel ban, such as family reunions and medical treatments. With the Olympics approaching, the Japanese government plans to update the list to include athletes and support staff.

  1. Good to know! I hope to be able to attend if they allow overseas spectators to come but I understand if they do not allow it. I’m hoping to get my vaccine shot by end of June.
