Total Rewards Diamond Status Via Credit Card Offer

Total Rewards Diamond Status Via Credit Card Offer

There has been a targeted email sent out to some Total Rewards members where they can earn Diamond Status after spending $5,000 on the Total Rewards Credit Card.  The offer was sent to a reader who was losing his Diamond Status.  I am not sure if that is who they are targeting or if it was sent to a wide variety of Total Rewards members.  Please let me know in the comments if you received a similar offer.

Details of the Offer

The offer states that the reader can maintain their Diamond Status if he does the following:

  • Register by February 15, 2018
  • Spend $5,000 on his Total Rewards Visa credit card by May 15th.

The reader earned Diamond status via a status match from MGM, which he got from a Hyatt status match.  His tier score is nowhere near reaching Diamond status again. And while Diamond status with Total Rewards has taken a hit lately there is still some value there.  Caesars Entertainment has also been walking back the devaluation a bit, extending the lounge access and offering tier credit promos already this year.

Is the Offer Worth It?

The Total Rewards Visa earns Rewards Credits (worth 1 cent each towards food and hotels etc.) the following ways:

  • 5X Reward Credits/$1 at Total Rewards destinations
  • 2X Reward Credits/$1 on gas, groceries, and airlines
  • 1X Reward Credits/$1 everywhere Visa is accepted

Let’s assume the reader was going to purchase Visa gift cards at the grocery store to reach the $5000 in spend. It would take 10 Visa gift cards to make that possible with a cost of $5.95 for each card. Then a cost of $0.35 per card to liquidate.  So 10 cards at a cost of $63.  For those purchases he would earn $101.19 in reward credits.

That puts him ahead by $38.19 but what else would Diamond Status get you.  The only thing that has for sure value is the $100 Diamond dinner.  Everything else is subjective.  The value for the other perks would depend entirely on how often they are used.  Some examples:

The value placed on these would be totally dependent on whether or not they were used.  If you go to Las Vegas often I would imagine you could get another $200 in value from these perks pretty easily.  Even more if you take a trip to the Atlantis.

Adding it all up you should be able to get a return of around 6% for that $5,000 in spend.  Not too shabby.

Conclusion

This is an intriguing offer if you received it.  If it is worth pursuing depends entirely how often you would use the perks.  The value of Diamond status is highly subjective.  Crunch the numbers and make sure it is a good deal before you pursue it!

You can get some of the same perks by signing up for the Wyndham card and status matching over to Total Rewards Platinum status.  That is another, easier option.  And something that will work even if you didn’t get this offer.

  1. I got the same offer. Do you only get diamond for a year and then have to earn it again through play?

  2. I also got the diamond status from my MGM status match. My diamond with TR is expiring so I am glad to have another opportunity to explore Total Rewards. There is no annual fee so that helps.

    • Walmart MO are 70 cents each up to $1000 in money order at a time. Split tender twice with 2 $500 gift cards, 35 cents each card.

  3. I received a similar offer. I would need to apply for the Total Rewards card and make the spend. I also received my Diamond match from MGM from Hyatt. I stayed at Caesars Palace for a conference during the time of my match. I was able to utilize the celebration dinner, free valet parking and no resort fees. That was certainly nice. I will probably be back this year again, but I’m not sure its worth it for a credit card pull.

    • Yeah the sign up bonus is only worth $100 and if you only go once or twice a year you won’t really take advantage of the perks much.
