Unadvertised 5X Earning Category On The Chase Sapphire Reserve

This is now dead according to Doctor of Credit.  It appears it was really an error on Chase’s part.

Chase launched some new perks this month for Sapphire cardholders. Starting July 1 and running through September 30, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will earn 5x bonus points for every dollar spent on purchases at gas stations and Instacart grocery delivery and pickup orders. They will also earn 10x on select streaming services.

However, these new benefits might be even better than advertised.

Unadvertised 5X Earning

Some data points show that restaurant purchases and other food delivery apps (at least DoorDash) orders besides Instacart are also earning 5X Ultimate Rewards points.

Here’s a screenshot from a purchase at Chipotle on July 1st that earned 5x:

The 5x Ultimate Rewards points with Instacart is limited for up to $3,000 in spending. I’m not sure if this limit applies to restaurant and other food delivery purchases, but I would guess so.

Conclusion

Earning 5X at restaurants and on food delivery orders was not advertised when the new perks were announced. Check your accounts and see if you earned 5X as well on these purchases. I’m not sure if Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders have any unexpected surprises as well this month.

  1. Slightly off topic but I filled up at Costco (WA state) on July 1 and tested out my CSR to see what would happen. It posted today as Gas at 5x points. Great to a get good price and 5x. And with 1.5 cash-out, better than using the Costco card.

  2. I love my Chase Sapphire Reserve card. The x1.5 for travel redemption’s is great. What I ask of Chase is to give us the x5 for both gas AND grocery store purchases to the end of the year. This year has been financially difficult for many and this would certainly help and show Chase in a very positive light.

  3. Drawback is no loyalty card gets used so no just 4 u deals or fuel rewards at Albertson’s various stores, and no fuel rewards at Kroger. Probably no coupons at Kroger either. Pick yur druthers!

  4. Hmmm, this has always been the case with American Express. My Amex Personal Gold earns 4x on UberEats and Grubhub. I don’t use Doordash, so I can’t comment on them.
