United Airlines Extends Expiring Flight Credits

United Airlines is giving customer more time to use their flight credits on tickets purchased between May 1, 2019, and Dec. 31, 2021.

United future flights credits are are typically valid for 12 months from the date the original ticket was issued. But the carrier is pushing all of those expiration dates back to December 31, 2022. Future flight credits can only be used for travel by the passenger who booked the original trip.

United Airlines actually offers two types of credits, future flight credits and electronic travel certificates. The latter can be transferred to other passengers as well and are valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. They can be used to book travel on United and United Express flights, and partner airlines sold on United digital channels.

Electronic travel certificates set to expire between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year will now be valid until the end of 2022, a United spokesperson told Travel + Leisure.
