United Airlines Offers Pilots Triple Pay to Avoid More Cancelations

Flight delays and cancellation have been a big issue for airlines especially over the holiday season.

The Christmas weekend was rough for major domestic airlines. United, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, SkyWest, Alaska Airlines and other carriers have cancelled more than 10,000 flights in total since Dec. 23. The main reason has been a staff  shortage due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases.

The CDC recently changed the  quarantine requirement for those who test positive. And that could help airlines. But United is also offering more money to pilots who pick up trips this month.

United Airlines is offering its pilots triple pay to pick up open trips between Jan. 4 and Jan. 29 to help ease its staffing shortage. Pilots were offered three-and-a-half times their pay for flying open trips between Dec. 30 and Jan. 3. The pay increase comes after an agreement between United and the pilots ’union, the Air Line Pilots Association.

Flight attendants who pick up additional trips will also get a pay increase from United this month. Other airlines such as JetBlue, American, Southwest and Spirit have also offered more money to pilots and staff recently to help with disruptions.
