How US Bank Gives the Arrival Premier a Run For Their Money… to the Bottom!!!

When the new Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard came out, I doubt many people were jumping out of joy. It was a big time flop, and Mark wrote that you would never see this card in his wallet. But can you really do worse than a $150 annual fee card with lackluster benefits? Yes… charge $450 instead.

U.S. Bank SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card

US Bank has released a new credit card, called the SKYPASS Select Visa Signature card. The new premium card comes with a $450 annual fee and benefits that we see on almost any card, even ones with a much more affordable annual fee. The bonus is only 30,000 miles which doesn’t even cover the annual fee. That’s an easy rule of thumb for deciding a card’s worthiness for many people.

Here’s a quick look at what you get for $450:

Bonus Miles after you spend $3,000 in eligible net purchases in 90 days 30,000
Annual statement credit on travel purchases Up to $200
TSA Pre✓® or Global Entry application fee statement credit
Bonus Miles at Renewal 10,000
Miles per dollar spend on Korean Air ticket net purchases 2 miles per $1
Miles per dollar spend on other Airline ticket, Car Rental & Hotel net purchases 2 miles per $1
Miles per dollar spend on all other eligible net purchases 1 miles per $1
Discount coupon for $100 off Korean Air ticket
2 Korean Air In-Flight Duty Free coupons of $25 each
2 KAL Lounge coupons each year
No foreign transaction fees

I’m not sure what US Bank is thinking here. I doubt any readers will be shelling out $450 for this card. Many cards already offer free Global Entry, so that’s not much of a draw. 10,000 bonus miles at renewal are also not enough to make you pay again. The only useful perk that I see is the $200 annual statement credit on travel purchases.

Is anyone thinking of applying?

  1. Do not go so hard on the Arrival Premier. I thought it gave the same benefits as the Arrival Plus, plus a few other things, and then some airline transfer options. As MS has now become very hard to do, I am very careful why I do any because the result needs to be at least 3x value in points or flights to be worth doing it. I do plan to upgrade to the Premier, but $450 for the USBank card tells me they must not be the smartest bunch of bankers. Buy one visa debit card and USBank will probably dump you.

  2. US Bank tries to compete with the big boys yet has the mentality of a cheap small town mom and pop shop bank. Their benefits are minimal, credit lines stingy, website reeks of AOL era.
