Why I Am Now Considering Chase’s Puny Upgrade Offer

World of Hyatt Credit Card Upgrade Offer

World of Hyatt Credit Card Upgrade Offer Decision

The Chase World of Hyatt card was launched earlier this year to much fan fare.  I was among it’s biggest supporters.  I think the card offers very good value for everyday spend, up to $15,000.  And it also makes mattress running a thing of the past for Hyatt status. When it launched Chase offered what I called a puny upgrade offer. It is really a pitiful offer, only 2,000 Hyatt points, but I think I am going to have my wife take it anyway.

The 5/24 Torpedo

We knew that Chase would be rolling out the dreaded 5/24 to the World of Hyatt card at some point.  It ended up coming sooner than I thought it would. Chase didn’t stop there either, they put ALL cards under the 5/24 umbrella.

My original plan was to wait the 24 months since my wife signed up for the old Hyatt card and then have her apply. I thought that was a better option versus taking the small upgrade offer.  With this change I am now limited to three choices.

  • Stay with the old version with the lower annual fee ($20 less per year).  I could hope for a more lucrative upgrade but I don’t see that happening.
  • Take the 2,000 points and upgrade now while there is still some type of offer.
  • Close the account – I think the anniversary night is worth more than the fee so this is already out.

I don’t plan on either of us being under 5/24 any time soon (or ever). That leaves me with no other options.

Why Upgrade?

I am choosing to upgrade her card not because of the 2,000 points but because I think it is the better product.  The anniversary night, category 1-4 locked, will cost $20 more per year with the new World of Hyatt card.  For the higher annual fee I will get better earning categories, the chance to unlock elite credits, and I can earn that second night with $15,000 in spend.

If I play my cards right I could have 4 award nights at a category 4 hotel after spending $30,000 between the two cards (plus at least 30,000 Hyatt points).  Welcome offers are becoming harder to come by so these spending bonuses have been more of a focus of mine.  Those 4 award certificates could net me around $1000 in value each year.

I have already broken down why I think the World of Hyatt card is a good non bonus spend option. And two is always better than one, or so they say.

Conclusion

With the landscape constantly changing I need to be able to adjust on the fly. The upgrade offer from Chase is not a great one (especially when compared to Amex) but upgrading allows me to get a product I have no other way of getting. I think the value is there and I am going to pull the trigger.  If you are interested in the offer check your email or call into Chase to see if it is on your account.

  1. Yeah I went for the 2000 offer to get better categories etc and had to fight for almost six months to get it awarded. Good grief for 2000. It does seem better than that IHG upgrade for 5000 that one I am absolutely not interested in . Twitter 🙂 Anyone

    • My wife just got the email a few days ago that said it expires 12/31 so I think they brought it back – maybe targeted though?

  2. I’m torn as well. Way over 5/24. I want the new card, but 2,000 points?! Such a low offer. If I do it, I’ll end up putting way more spend on the card to hit that 15,000 point bonus which would make it difficult to meet MS on other cards. I don’t really manufacture spend. Does anyone still think they will come out with a premium card?

  3. I bet the 2k upgrade offer doesn’t increase, either. And I really want that 60k – (almost) free night for 2 at the new Miraval Austin when it opens, worth $1,600! Cannot pass that up…

I closed my old acct a day after receiving the original bonus 24 months ago & am waiting on it to show as closed on my credit report then applying immediately for the WOH. Hoping happens before the extra 20k goes away.

I make sure either my husband or I are always under 5/24 just for these type opportunities (3x CFU also comes to mind earlier this year where I also am cleaning up).

    • I hope you are able to get in before the 20K goes away – it is a pretty great offer!

Sounds like the points will go to great use 🙂

  4. A lot of people that waited for a better upgrade offer from the Marriott Premier to the Marriott Premier Plus eventually got rewarded for their patience as Chase raised the original upgrade offers from 10,000 and 20,000 points up to 50,000 points. Their patience paid off. To me, that 2,000 upgrade offer for the Hyatt is a joke, especially when you compare it to upgrade offers I get from American Express. I am definitely gonna wait until they give a better upgrade offer.

    • That is true but some were getting 50K offers right from the beginning. I haven’t seen anyone get more than 2K for this. Not saying it can’t happen but I don’t think it will. The IHG card was only giving out 5K offers.

  5. I am under 5/24 and I have the same dilemma…for some reason I am kind of afraid to call on chase’s attention by closing my account and the reapplying. Would you do this if you were under 5/24?…I can use the 60000 points for 3 nights at the park hyatt in Buenos Aires next year. Need advice.

    • I would space it out by a little bit – a few weeks or so but I would do it for sure. 60K Hyatt points are one of their best available bonuses (better than CSP or CSR imo).

    • I had no issues with Chase doing this very thing. My husband also did the same thing a few months back, so I wouldn’t worry.

I also just signed up for the Chase Sapphire Checking Account for the 60,000 URs offered. I applied for the WOH card shortly thereafter, and Chase is now suddenly giving me a huge credit line on the card! Before I had to take from other accounts for decent CLs on the new ones since I have 8 lines with them! Interesting . . .

  6. Don’t forget the Brand Explorer! Stay at 5 different Hyatt brands, and get another free night. Not sure if this was a benefit with the old card. I had my husband refer me earlier this year then, I canceled his card and referred him. We are completing his spend right now, and will have netted 140,000 points for the bonus alone…not to mention the spend.
We are pretty loyal to the Hyatt brand, and definitely under the 5/24 rule so, a complete win/win for us.

    • I love the Brand Explorer perk but that is a part of World of Hyatt’s reward program and you can get it with or without the card. I need one more brand for my next award too.

That is a great haul! Can never have too many Hyatt points 🙂
