WOW Air Ceases Operations

WOW’s Epic Crash Comes To A Screeching Halt Stranding Customers Near & Far

Icelandic budget carrier Wow Air has ceased operations and canceled its flights, leaving passengers stranded on both sides of the Atlantic. Some 2,700 passengers are left scrambling to find a way to their destination.  And many more that had plans over the next several week. The airline was still advertising their $99 fares by email yesterday, just hours before canceling all flights.

A travel alert has been posted on their website. It says that “WOW AIR has ceased operation. All WOW AIR flights have been cancelled.”  It wasn’t until Thursday morning that passengers that were expecting to fly, received text messages or emails from Wow Air informing them that the airline had shut down.

Passengers whose ticket was paid with a credit card are advised to contact their credit card company to check whether a refund of the ticket cost will be issued. WOW Air advises people who wanted to travel should now look for “so-called rescue fares” which may now be offered by rival airlines.

WOW grounded at least six planes in North America that were set to leave late Wednesday from Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, New York and Baltimore. In Europe, Reykjavik-bound planes from seven cities – Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Frankfurt and Copenhagen – did not take off Thursday morning.

The airline had been in financial trouble for quite some time now. A takeover by rival Icelandair failed twice. So this wasn’t entirely unexpected, but the abrupt end had caused major headaches. Founded in 2011, Wow Air was known for cheap trans-Atlantic fares on routes via Iceland, sometimes as low as $49 one way.

Based in NYC. Points/miles enthusiast for years and actively writing about it for the last two years at Danny the Deal Guru. I'm always looking out for deals. Making a few bucks is always nice, but the traveling is by far the best part of this business.
