Air Canada Temporarily Stops Flights to U.S.
Air Canada has announced that it will suspend service to the United States after Canada and the U.S. agreed to extend a restriction on non-essential travel for another 30 days.
The Department of Homeland Security announced the following measure on April 20:
In close collaboration, the US, Mexico, and Canada have each agreed to extend restrictions on non-essential travel across their shared borders for 30 additional days. As President Trump stated last week, border control, travel restrictions and other limitations remain critical to slowing the spread and allowing the phased opening of the country.
Non-essential travel between the countries was initially banned on March 21, 2020.
Air Canada said on Tuesday its last commercial flights between Canada and the U.S. will be on April 26th. The airline plans to resume service May 22nd, unless these government restrictions are extended once again. Air Canada said it will waive change fees for affected customers CBC reports.
WestJet has also extended its suspension of all trans-border and international flights. It stopped flying those routes as of March 22 for 30 days. Then it extended the service suspension until June 4, 2020.

Wasn’t the travel restrictions only affecting land border crossings and not flights to/from cities? My mid-March flight to Mexico (Cancun) was not not cancelled and there was no border control at the airport preventing people from flying out and into Mexico. I don’t believe there was ever a BAN (and prevention) from taking a leisure trip…obviously it’s not wise to do so. And I haven’t heard of United or any other U.S. carriers stopping folks from taking what few flights they still have running to/from cities south of the border. Thanks
