American Airlines Lawsuit Over Account Shutdowns

Back in late 2019 and early 2020, American Airlines shut down many AAdvantage accounts, due to members earning multiple credit card bonuses. American Airlines credit cards are issued by Citi and Barclays. They usually have a 48-month language, but sone links didn’t.

Now some of those people that had their accounts shut down are taking legal action. American Airlines was sued on Monday in a proposed class action by two customers who said they were stripped of of 1.1 million frequent flier miles.

Ari and Shanna Nachison said the airline wrongly accused them of fraud. The Los Gatos, California residents said that while some card applications prevented multiple mileage bonuses within a 48-month period, theirs did not. Their accounts were shut down in 2020.

Both said the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier cited violations “related to the accrual of ineligible miles and benefits; through fraud, misrepresentation and/or abuse of the AAdvantage Program” in emails announcing the terminations.

Reuters reports that Ari Nachison said he lost 564,463 miles, while Shanna Nachison said she lost 550,664 miles.

The lawsuit was filed in the San Jose, California federal court seeks damages for people whose AAdvantage accounts were terminated based on alleged fraud for applying for multiple Citi and Barclays AAdvantage credit cards.

  1. Wait a second, I just applied for both cards AA from Barclay and CITI and got approved. Does that means I’ll not get the signup bonus? ‍♂️

    • Google the history behind this and you’ll find these people likely did what everyone else did. People were applying for cards under their dogs names over and over.
