American Airlines Testing New Tech to Enforce Boarding Groups
American Airlines is testing a new feature to make sure travelers actually board with their assigned group. The new tech seems to have been in place at select airports around the country for at least few weeks.
Once boarding starts, it is normal for everyone to rush the gate, even if their boarding group has not been called yet. Gate agents are not always paying attention to the boarding group when scanning boarding passes, so some of these line jumpers might get through.
The new tech prevents that, with an alert message and error sound that beeps when the boarding pass does not match the current boarding group. When this happens, gate agents will ask the passenger to step the side until their group is called.
The trial has been active in Albuquerque and Tucson. based on the feedback it has received, the airline plans to expand to more airports soon, including Washington Reagan National Airport.
“We are in the early phase of testing new technology used during the boarding process. The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team,” a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement.
