American Airlines to Switch to Dynamic Pricing Soon?
Dynamic pricing seems to be the new trend nowadays and award charts are disappearing. Delta has not had an award chart in a while. Then, just recently, United Airlines followed suit, as they announced that they will get rid of award charts later this year as well.
Now it looks like American Airlines will next in line switch to dynamic pricing and likely drop award charts. The news comes from JonNYC on Twitter. There’s really no more information besides that, so we do not know when this could happen.
The news is not completely unexpected, as American Airlines was the last one left out of the Big 3 domestic Airlines that didn’t have dynamic pricing.
Airlines often try to present these changes as positive. Yes, there could be more award space available, as that has long been one of the issues with the AAdvantage program. But dynamic pricing and lack of award charts rarely results in good news. Not knowing how many miles you need for a flight, makes it difficult to plan ahead. What you think could have been a great redemption, might go up in price and leave you with a bunch of devalued miles.
Conclusion
This is more bad news, but not completely out of the blue. Might be a good idea to start thinking about redemptions soon if you’re seating on large amounts of AAdvantage miles. I would expect American Airlines to give notice well ahead if it does happen though.
