Bonus of 50K Membership Rewards to Upgrade to Amex Platinum Business

American Express is targeting some business cardmembers with an offer to upgrade to an Amex Business Platinum Card. Let’s look at the details of this offer that can get you a bonus of 50K points.

The Offer

Get 50,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 in purchases on the Business Platinum Card in the first 5 months from the date your account is upgraded.

Here’s some links to try:

Worth it?

There’s several things to look at when considering this offer.

Annual Fee – This is prorated based on where you are in your cardmember year. You could pay a fraction of the $550 annual fee, or close to the whole thing if your annual fee just hit recently.

Bonus – Many people will already have received a sign-up bonus for this card and thus can’t get another one for a long time. So this is a good option to squeeze some more points out of the same card.

Annual Travel Credit – This card gets a $200 annual travel credit per calendar year. So theoretically you could get that once in 2019 and once in 2020 before deciding what to do with the Business Platinum when the annual fee comes due again next year.

Spend – This offer requires $10,000 in spend. After meeting the spend, you will have a total of 60,000 points total (50K bonus & 10K from normal earning). 6X is a great earning ratio on everyday spend, even better when we’re talking about Membership Rewards points. But be careful. Amex is fairly strict about not paying bonuses when spending is met through purchasing gift cards.

Other Benefits – The card also provides lots of perks for frequent travelers, so having one of the Platinum cards in your pocket while traveling is always a plus.

Conclusion

I think this bonus is great if you are targeted. You get $400 in travel credits the first year plus 6X earnings (60,000 points) on $10,000 in spend. That all adds up to being worth it in my opinion. Especially if you already have had the card in the past. And there’s no hard pull to upgrade.

  1. So, I wonder if this would potentially work with my AMEX SPG Business Card I got in 2017 before the Marriott-SPG merger and they killed the major benefit of the card (free lounge access). Been thinking of dumping it anyway but renewed it for the free annual night @ $95 annual renewal.
