Report That The Amex Green Card Counts Towards 4 Credit Card Limit
Update 3/15/21: I was able to get a Green card last night while already having 4 credit cards, I was instantly approved. I had to take advantage of those increased referrals and $200 credit! A reader reached out and had the same experience as well as Frequent Miler had the same experience. It appears the Amex Green card does not count towards the 4 card limit.
There is a report on Reddit that they were denied a new card because they were at American Express’ 4 credit card limit. Normally the Amex Green card is not considered towards the credit card limit, it falls under the separate 10 card limit.
The first thought is do they have pay over time activated on their account? I talked about why you should turn this off in the past. Reddit user manlymatt83 was already aware of this fact and had turned off the pay over time feature. He even got in touch with customer service to ensure it was off.
After double and triple checking that pay over time was turned off he called Amex again to get his application processed, still no dice. Another Reddit user claims that it is probably because the pay over time feature works for all purchases with the Amex Green card and not just purchases over $100 like with the Gold and Platinum card. That would mean the person is enrolled in the program whether they elect to or not. And it would roll the card into the 4 credit card limit since it is a credit card with a finite credit limit.
This is only one data point but it doesn’t look good. When you pair it up with what we have seen in the past with cards and pay over time offers it seems like it could be more than a one off thing. If you have run into something similar with your Amex Green card and trying to apply for a new credit card let us know in the comments.
