$5 Off $15 At Walmart.com

American Express released a new offer this morning giving $5 credit back with a $15 or more purchase at Walmart.com. The best part about this deal is that it doesn’t seem to be targeted, meaning you can load it to your cards from an account on the American Express website or load it via social media. On Twitter for example, all you need to do is tweet #AmexWalmart and you will be enrolled on your linked card.

Do Gift Cards Work

Review Place Order

The terms and conditions specifically exclude, “gift card reloads & prepaid cards.”  This type of language often shows up on these kind of deals, so I always take it with a grain of salt. To check if a gift card would trigger the credit, I went to Walmart.com and bought a $15 physical Walmart gift card with an Amex card that had the offer loaded on to it. (Walmart ships the card for free.)

Within a few minutes of completing the purchase, I received the email thanking me for using my enrolled card. That email generally indicates the credit will go through, however it will still take a day or two to make sure everything works as planned. I only bought one of the gift cards today, so I can wait and see what happens.

I bought physical gift cards because I tend to lose track of e-gift cards when I have several of them. Physical gift cards tend to be easier to deal with and if I decide to sell them later, it is a much easier process. Many sites which buy gift cards will no longer purchase e-gift cards.

Quite a few gift card purchasing sites are paying 90% of face value for physical Walmart gift cards. This means that they will pay you $13.50 for a card that only cost you $10. (Plus you earn rewards on the Amex card used.) Yes you are making money, but is it really worth it? That is something that you will have to decide. I would only go this route if you never shop at Walmart or have no use for their merchandise.

Since you can load this offer on to all of your Amex cards, if you shop at Walmart you could view this as 33% off of your normal expenses. In my case, I have 12 cards which I have synced, meaning I can buy $180 in household goods for $120. Not a bad deal, although I generally don’t shop much at Walmart. With that said, I am there enough that I will eventually spend the money.

Conclusion

No matter how you spin it, this is a good deal for a discount at a store that just about everyone has near them. While I wish this was for a higher dollar amount ($15 off of $60 for example), it will only take a few minutes to buy the gift cards and I already have an excellent system of organization for keeping track of them once they are here.
