Amex Platinum Uber Credit Changes

Amex Platinum Uber Credit Changes & Bonus

December is one of my favorite months for a number of reasons. There is of course Chanukah, Christmas and various other holidays to celebrate, but there are also a ton of great deals to maximize before the clock strikes Midnight on New Year’s.

Awhile back in an effort to beef up the card to compete with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express added a (very popular in my house) new Uber benefit to their personal Platinum card. That credit amounts to $200 per year, but of course giving you the entire credit at once would be too simple and wouldn’t cause breakage.

So instead of giving you the entire credit at once, American Express doles out your Uber credit in $15 chunks monthly. $15 x 11 months = $165, meaning they are falling short come December. To make up for that they give members $35 to celebrate the end of the year. Your credit should now be in your Uber account!

Uber Cash Not Credits

This Uber benefit used to come in the form of credits, but now American Express Platinum Uber credits are being given as Uber Cash. Just like before your credits work with both Uber & Uber Eats and expire at the end of the month, but you need to make sure to select Uber Cash as your payment.

Conclusion

I am a fan of the Amex Platinum Uber credits and the end of year bonus mostly because I use Uber often and I don’t need to remember to do anything to get the credit.

Look out for a post coming up this week detailing all of the other deals you should take advantage of before the end of the year!

  1. Mine just says “Amex Credits” as the payment method and nothing else. No dollar amount like everyone else. This is such a headache. What am I even paying this annual fee for?

  2. It seems that any unused credit from November is rolling over to December. Got an email today from Amex saying this will be a one-time thing, due to the Uber Cash changes and confusion. Checked my Uber Cash and have $50 available. $15 from Nov and $35 from Dec.

  3. I have 2 Plat cards. I added both cards to Uber. But I only see 1 $35 Uber credit shouldering in my Uber account.

  4. Here’s Uber’s explanation to me today:

    —-—
Your Amex Premium Benefits are directly added to your Uber Cash balance each month.

To use your Uber Cash balance toward a ride, you will need to set Uber Cash as your payment method. To select Uber Cash as your payment method:

    1. Enter your destination
    2. Tap your payment method
    3. Tap “Change” under “Profile” if you’ve setup a profile
    4. Tap “Uber Cash”

If you don’t have enough Uber Cash to cover your ride, you’ll be given the option to buy enough to cover your ride, or buy a set amount of Uber Cash and receive a discount on the purchase.

  5. Yes I just got hosed on this change on 11/29. Neither of my end of month rides used the benefit and instead were billed to my Amex! Previously, you just had to indicate AMEX as your payment method to use the benefit, but now you have to select “Uber cash.” Of course, it took about six back-and-forth messages with Uber to get this answer. Hope your timely heads up helps others.

  6. I just want to be sure that after the credit is applied, any remaining balance is not charged to my AMEX card.
