Amex Refer A Friend Bonus Timeframe
There is no doubt that American Express refer a friend bonuses are a great way to rack up some extra points. That is especially true if you have a two player system, yourself and a significant other that play the miles and points game. It is like getting a bonus on top of a bonus when you pair up a new welcome offer with a referral bonus. The other nice thing is there is no spend required when earning a referral bonus. plus the points post pretty quickly. Just how quickly though? I figured I would share my Amex refer a friend bonus timeframe with you.
How Quickly Do Amex Referral Bonuses Post? My Timeframe
I recently referred my wife to an American Express personal card from my Amex Business Gold card. The really awesome thing about the American Express referral program is that you can refer to pretty much any card, personal or business, from Membership Rewards earning cards. Their co-branded cards, like Hilton or Marriott, are card family locked though.
Enough about all of that. Here is our timeframe on how long it took for my American Express referral points to post:
- I referred my wife and she applied on Friday 8/12/22
- She got a pending message after the application
- She was approved via email on 8/14/22
- The points were in my account the morning of 8/15/22
- Received an email on 8/16/22 telling me I earned points for the referral
This has been my experience in the past too. Usually the points have posted for the referrer the day after the approval for the referee. This could take a day or so extra if a weekend is involved though. It has normally been one of the quickest payouts among the banks. Only Cardless comes to mind as quicker.
Amex Refer A Friend Timeframe: Final Thoughts
If you have been thinking about chasing some of that sweet Amex refer a friend bonus points nectar you will be happy to know that you get your fix pretty quickly. They have normally posted the day after approval for me. This last go around was no different. Sometimes referral links will show better offers than what is publicly available too. Try opening them incognito etc. for better results. This is a nice way to top off for an award quickly if you are a few points short too.
How quickly have your Amex referral points posted in the past? Let me know in the comments.

I always had the same short turn around on referral points that you mentioned. However, I am currently in the middle of different experience. I referred my friend nearly two months ago and he was approved. The referral posted to my Membership Rewards activity, but with 0 points. I confirmed both prior and afterwards with AMEX reps that I had not exceeded the annual maximum for points. This aligns with my records. Multiple reps have now told me they see on my account that points are scheduled to post on my next statement closing, which is nearly 2 months after the referral approval. We shall see.
I have heard of a lot of people having issues with missing referral points a few months ago. Sounds like it was Amex’s normal glitch that hits people for random stuff. They usually correct it eventually just can take forever. Hopefully they post this statement!
